We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Linda Johnston. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Linda below.
Linda, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today We’d love to start by getting your thoughts on what you are seeing as some the biggest trends emerging in your industry.
One of the biggest trends in the writing and publication industries is the introduction of AI, Artificial intelligence. There are multiple services available today to assist writers with rewording or improving the points they are trying to get across to the reader. This trend has been greeted by some with open arms and others have shunned it, feeling it is no longer their work. Having gone to several classes on this subject, it was shocking how well AI would write with the parameters it is given.
Interestingly enough, I attended one class using three different AI programs. Each were given the same parameters; however, each program spit out something totally different. In one case, the program killed off the main female character. That wasn’t in the parameters. Somehow, it made this assumption from the information it was given. Each program can be vastly different from another. Finding the right program to work with is important.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I’ve written since I was a child. There was always a story to tell. My first attempt at publication was when I was quite young and really had no idea what I was doing and there was no one to guide me on the ins and outs. I did receive a letter back rejecting my manuscript. But they actually read it and told me that I had a natural talent for the art of storytelling and to continue writing. It was validation of sorts. It was years later before I ever put myself out there again. That happened through a friend’s encouragement. She is a writer with over forty books to her name. She had insisted that I send her a sample of my work, but I had been hesitant. I finally sent the first ten pages of my story. It was over a week before she contacted me, and I naturally assumed it sucked. But when she finally called, I was prepared for the worst. She told me it took her a several days to calm down so she wouldn’t hit me with something for not sending in my work. Eight books later…I have found new joy in sharing my stories with others.
Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
As a writer, resilience against the constant sense of failure while waiting to hear about your latest submission, is something all authors struggle to maintain. The time, research and effort that goes into the process is considerable, plus your heart is in it too. It’s a devastating blow when you are hit with rejection. In my journey, I’ve had many a blow to my ego. My feelings crushed…but I survived. I’ve written since elementary school. Resilience is something I have in spades. I never gave up. I continually worked at my craft trying to better myself. My first book was published when I was seventy years old. My message to all out there who continue to work towards their goals is don’t give up! The old adage, ‘It’s never too late.’ is true. Three years later, I have eight books published, with six more at various stages in the pipeline. Go after your dream!!
Are there any resources you wish you knew about earlier in your creative journey?
When I started writing I had no idea that there were writer groups out there. At that time there were no computers, no internet or anything else that could give me instant information. You relied on other people, the library or teachers and parents. I made so many mistakes as I went through the learning process…. but the need to write my stories would continually force me to keep going and not quit. Now I’m secretary of the Heart of Carolina Romance Writers, the North Carolina chapter affiliated with RWA. (Romance Writers of America) I’ve been active in this chapter for years and have learned so much. Just casual conversation with other authors is like an education in itself. If you are pursuing writing, one of the best things you can do for yourself is join a writing group. It will pay off in spades!
