We recently connected with Linda Handley and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Linda, thanks for joining us today. Owning a business isn’t always glamorous and so most business owners we’ve connected with have shared that on tough days they sometimes wonder what it would have been like to have just had a regular job instead of all the responsibility of running a business. Have you ever felt that way?
Reflections on Corporate America
My journey in corporate America began after graduating from the University of Pittsburgh, where I stepped into the dynamic world of health administration and IT. Working at a leading medical center, I had the privilege of collaborating with some of the brightest minds in the field. These experiences sharpened my technical and strategic skills and deepened my appreciation for innovation and teamwork.
However, like many in corporate environments, I also encountered challenges. At times, navigating the complexities of administration and bureaucracy required as much ingenuity as the technical solutions we were developing. These moments taught me the value of resilience, adaptability, and, most importantly, the importance of building systems that empower rather than hinder.
Finding My Path as a Business Owner
As a business owner, I can say that I’m undeniably happier. The autonomy, creativity, and ability to align my work with my personal values have been liberating.
I remember one day, not long ago, when I had been juggling multiple projects, managing client work, and handling some unexpected challenges at a rental property. It was one of those days where nothing seemed to go according to plan. I found myself daydreaming about the simplicity of a structured 9-to-5 job—where someone else handles the big-picture stress and I could just focus on one task at a time.
But as I sat with that thought, I realized that while a “regular job” might have offered temporary relief, it wouldn’t have fulfilled me in the same way. I thrive on problem-solving, leading initiatives, and creating impact. The freedom to design my own path and the deep connections I’ve made through my work far outweigh the comfort of a predictable routine. That realization reinvigorated me to push through the challenges of that day and reminded me why I chose this journey in the first place.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I’m Linda Handley, a mission-driven entrepreneur with a background in health administration and IT. My journey began after graduating from the University of Pittsburgh, where I worked at a leading medical center. Over time, I discovered a passion for creating systems and strategies that not only solve complex problems but also drive meaningful change. Inspired by my upbringing in Hershey, PA, I later founded a real estate investment company focused on urban restoration, providing affordable housing, and launched a nonprofit, Building Bridges for Business, to empower others with resources and education.
Today, I provide strategic consulting services for small businesses and nonprofits, offering solutions in funding, marketing, client acquisition, and operational efficiency. I’m proud to deliver tailored services like VIP Days, group training, and digital tools such as the Donor Blueprint and Client Success Suite. My work addresses common challenges like securing funding, building strong relationships, and creating sustainable growth strategies.
What sets me apart is my ability to blend big-picture strategy with actionable systems. Whether it’s a nonprofit trying to make a greater impact or a small business owner overwhelmed by marketing demands, I thrive on delivering clarity and results.
Above all, I’m most proud of the impact my work has had—empowering over 100,000 students, supporting countless organizations, and fostering meaningful connections.
We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
Recently, I faced an unexpected emergency when an SUV drove through one of my commercial office spaces late at night. Thankfully, no one was there, but the situation required immediate attention—securing the building, assessing damages, and coordinating repairs—all while managing my consulting business and ongoing client commitments.
Here’s how I stayed resilient and kept moving forward:
Pause and Prioritize: In moments of crisis, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed. I took a breath, identified immediate priorities—securing the building and notifying relevant parties—and delegated tasks where possible.
Rely on Established Systems: Having systems already in place, such as insurance contacts and a list of trusted contractors, allowed me to act quickly and efficiently. Preparation saved time and minimized stress.
Ask for Help: I leaned on my team and support network to handle certain responsibilities, ensuring I could still focus on my consulting business. Don’t hesitate to delegate or outsource during times of crisis.
Keep Perspective: Reminding myself that this was a temporary setback, I focused on the bigger picture, including the clients I’m passionate about helping. This mindset kept me grounded and motivated.
Resilience is about preparation, adaptability, and maintaining focus. Emergencies will come, but systems, support, and perspective help turn chaos into manageable challenges.
Where do you think you get most of your clients from?
The best source of new clients for me has consistently been referrals and networking. Relationships are at the heart of my business, and the trust built through authentic connections naturally leads to client growth. Whether it’s a past client sharing their success story with a colleague or someone in my network recommending my services, these personal endorsements carry more weight than any ad ever could.
Networking has also been pivotal. I actively participate in professional groups and platforms like LinkedIn and Alignable, as well as local organizations like the Northside Chamber of Commerce. These spaces provide opportunities to showcase my expertise, engage in meaningful conversations, and offer value without expecting anything in return.
One strategy that works well is staying top of mind. I regularly follow up with my network, share valuable insights, and ask how I can support them. By prioritizing genuine relationships over sales pitches, I’ve found that referrals often come naturally.
Another key to success is providing exceptional results. When clients experience real impact—whether through streamlined systems, increased funding, or stronger client relationships—they’re eager to recommend me to others.
Referrals and networking are about fostering trust, delivering value, and building lasting relationships. It’s not just a strategy—it’s the foundation of my business.
