We were lucky to catch up with Linda Burton recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Linda, thanks for joining us today. Did you always know you wanted to pursue a creative or artistic career? When did you first know?
When I was around 40, I heard someone say that the thing that you should be doing for a living is the thing that you were most passionate about when you were seven years old. Well, when I was 7, I had one of those big Barbie doll heads that you could style the hair and put makeup on. I would play with her all of the time! I loved putting makeup on Barbie ` even if it was just green and blue! As silly as it sounds, that was the first time that I gave any serious thought to switching careers from being a paralegal to becoming a makeup artist.
Linda, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I became a MAC Pro makeup artist in 2010 in Connecticut and worked in Times Square doing runway makeup, working with Cosmopolitan, Seventeen and MTV, before moving to Bluffton, SC and graduating from the International Spa Institute in 2014. After gaining years of waxing, skincare, and airbrush makeup experience, I opened my own business, Linda Burton Beauty in 2021. Since moving to Bluffton, SC, I have worked with the PGA Heritage Golf Tournament, The Today
Show, Hilton Head Monthly Magazine, jeweler Selina King and Nick Arojo (“What Not to Wear”), I also work as an esthetician at Le Spa in Sea Pines on Hilton Head Island as well as Hampton Lake Spa, I am also currently working with Producer Tracey Edmonds. I have provided makeup for a multitude of bridal parties and special events, and I specialize in custom facials, brow shaping, and airbrush makeup, and strive to help each client achieve their personal skincare and beauty goals.
Are there any books, videos or other content that you feel have meaningfully impacted your thinking?
The biggest ongoing resource for me personally has been iArtist and the Makeup Show. They have helped mentor me and direct my path for the past two years. It has made a world of difference for me. I had a particularly bad experience at a wedding that I was doing the makeup for, and it almost made me want to quit doing makeup, but instead I decided to apply for the iArtist Program. I was so happy to find out that I was accepted! My mentors were Danessa Myricks, James Vincent and Shelly Taggar. The program really pushed me outside of my comfort zone, which was exactly what I needed.
Are there any resources you wish you knew about earlier in your creative journey?
This is going to sound silly, but I wish I knew about rechargeable air guns sooner…
