We recently connected with Linda Baker and have shared our conversation below.
Linda , thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today We love asking folks what they would do differently if they were starting today – how they would speed up the process, etc. We’d love to hear how you would set everything up if you were to start from step 1 today
If I were to start over today , knowing everything I know now I would have done alot of things differently in order to be on a faster track with my career. In my generation, social media/technology has become a thing which happens to be a bad thing and a good thing. I say a good thing because it allows us entrepreneurs and other businesses to get more exposure but it also can be a bad thing because you can lose track of whats best for your business by negative content which could hinder you from the bigger picture of what your trying to accomplish your business. What Im trying to say is sometimes I could lose focus on what I need to do for my business in order for it to grow by being on social media too much when I could be picking up a book sometimes to learn about my industry, learn the ins and outs making myself/business stand out more. Sometimes social media can make or break you but you have to keep focus onto the bigger picture. I would also write my goals down instead of jotting it down in my head , writing it down/manifesting can have a positive effect on your business.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
For the people who don’t know my name is Linda Baker owner of ” AlluringMinkz” a business a prematurely started doing the service of applying lash extensions. I started my business in highschool , six years ago I started my business by selling lash strips. I wanted to expand so I asked my dad to pay half of my lash extension class as I would pay the other half and it went from there. I’ve been doing lash extensions since , I honestly didn’t think I would have gotten so far into this career but I did . I took no breaks until I graduated high school and decided to go to college to become a nurse but God had other plans and I knew it too deep down. So , I dropped out of college and decided to sign up for cosmetology school all in the midst of my uncle Howard passed , he was a licensed cosmetologist here in my hometown with his own salon that I worked in doing lash extensions. He always knew I was going to be a stylist because I did do hair on the side or my hair occasionally. With him passing , it drove me even more to start cosmetology school , I wasn’t able to tell him I was going but I know he’s happy that I did because I really enjoy it! I am determined to graduate and obtain my license as a licensed cosmetologist in the near future . I’m also going to be expanding my business to hair , makeup , skin care, lashes , etc so in that case I will be a well rounded stylist soon!
What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
Being an entrepreneur you come across people who will doubt you and your vision. One thing I had to unlearn with the path Im on in life is that you don’t have to tell people/family your visions all the time just let it happen especially if you are dedicated in what your doing. Never give up and always go for your dreams no matter who’s with you and who’s not. I went to college because I felt like it was the right thing to do and everyone wanted me to go especially when I said I wanted to be a nurse . In all honesty , I didn’t know what I was going to school for I just didn’t want to disappoint anybody but I was unhappy in what I was doing. It wasn’t my calling so I talked to God and took my route and what I wanted to do . I’m the happiest, I’ve ever been it has been a weight lifted off my shoulders since. Some family members weren’t happy but I had to to learn it’s my life and I only get one so why be unhappy in what Im doing when I can actually find my niche and actually be happy doing it.
What’s been the most effective strategy for growing your clientele?
Growing my clientele wasn’t easy at work but having social media made it kind of easy because you get to post your work and your journey. Another way to growing your clients is being consistent and always having good customer service if you have good customer service clients/customers will come back to enjoy the experience.
