We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Lin Tam. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Lin below.
Alright, Lin thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. We’d love to hear the backstory behind a risk you’ve taken – whether big or small, walk us through what it was like and how it ultimately turned out.
The making of the short film “Friendship” during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic was a journey fraught with risks and uncertainties. This period was defined by worldwide lockdowns, remote work challenges, and a general sense of unpredictability in both personal and professional spheres.
Before the pandemic, the concept for “Friendship” had already been developed, and the excitement around its potential was palpable among the team. However, as COVID-19 escalated into a global crisis, it became clear that our usual production processes would be severely disrupted. The industry was grappling with how to continue production remotely, and many projects were either paused indefinitely or canceled.
Despite these challenges, I decided to move forward with producing “Friendship.” This decision was driven by a strong belief in the story’s relevance—emphasizing connections and resilience in trying times—which felt more pertinent than ever. However, taking this step meant adapting to a fully remote production environment, a first for our team and myself. We had to rely entirely on digital communication tools and develop workflows that could accommodate the disparate locations and time zones of our team members.
The production faced significant hurdles. Coordination over digital platforms brought technical glitches and communication delays. More critically, several team members contracted COVID-19 during production, leading to unexpected absences and emotional stress for everyone involved. Each instance threatened to derail our timeline and strained our resources and morale.
To manage these challenges, we implemented flexible scheduling, increased our frequency of virtual check-ins to foster a sense of community, and provided support to affected team members. We experimented with new collaboration tools and digital assets management systems to streamline workflows and ensure continuity in creative processes.
Despite the tumultuous production period, “Friendship” was completed and emerged as a testament to the creativity and resilience of the team. The film was not only a creative achievement but also went on to win several awards at distinguished film festivals.
This experience taught me invaluable lessons in leadership and adaptability. It reinforced the importance of maintaining a clear vision and supportive culture, especially in times of crisis. The successful completion of “Friendship” under such challenging conditions was a risk that not only paid off but also profoundly shaped my approach to filmmaking and team management.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I’ve always been fascinated by the intersection of technology and storytelling, which has guided my career path between the tech and entertainment industries. My journey began with a deep love for animation and a desire to leverage cutting-edge technology to tell stories that resonate deeply and impactfully.
My entry into the industry was fueled by an early interest in how stories could be enhanced and expanded through technological advancements. Over the years, I’ve had the opportunity to work across various roles that blend technical proficiency with creative vision, which has allowed me to pioneer innovative projects in digital content, VR, and now, AI-enhanced animation.
Currently, I serve as the Chief Creative AI Officer at Immix Studios, where we are at the forefront of integrating AI into animation. Our work involves not just creating entertainment but crafting experiences that are enriched and made more accessible through AI. At Immix Studios, we are committed to pushing the boundaries of what AI can achieve in storytelling, making each project not only a narrative journey but also a showcase of technological innovation.
Our services span traditional animation production to advanced AI-driven projects. What sets us apart is our dual focus on creative excellence and technical innovation. This hybrid approach ensures to pioneer methods and techniques, reimagining the future of storytelling.

How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
One of the most significant pivots in my career occurred as the animation industry began to evolve with the rapid advancements in AI technology. Having worked in traditional animation and digital content, I recognized early on that AI was not just a fleeting trend but a transformative force in storytelling and production.
The realization that AI could fundamentally change how we create and interact with animated content came during a period of rapid technological change in the industry. AI tools were starting to handle tasks that traditionally required extensive human input, from automating animation sequences to generating dynamic story elements in real-time. This shift presented both a challenge and an opportunity: adapt to stay relevant or risk falling behind.
The decision to pivot wasn’t easy. It required not just learning new technologies but also fundamentally rethinking our creative and production processes. I spearheaded the integration of AI at Immix Studios, starting with smaller, experimental projects to build our expertise and confidence. This hands-on approach allowed us to understand the nuances of AI in animation, leading to the development of workflows that blended traditional artistic methods with AI-driven techniques.
The pivot involved overcoming significant challenges, including resistance to change within the team and the steep learning curve associated with these technologies. However, by fostering a culture of innovation and continuous learning, we were able to not only adapt but also excel. We developed proprietary AI tools that enhanced our animation processes, from automated character animation to AI-assisted storytelling, which significantly reduced production times and opened new creative possibilities.
This strategic pivot has profoundly impacted our studio as pioneers in AI Animation. Reflecting on this pivot, it’s clear that embracing AI was one of the most impactful decisions of my career. It has not only reinforced our competitive edge but also reaffirmed our commitment to innovation. For anyone considering a similar shift, my experience underscores the importance of embracing change, investing in new skills, and fostering a culture that supports innovation and adaptation.

For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
For me, the most rewarding aspect of being an artist and a creative is the profound ability to tell stories that resonate deeply with audiences, creating lasting impacts on their lives. This power to evoke emotions and provoke thought is what drives my passion for storytelling.
A prime example of this is through my work on the short film “Friendship.” This project was especially meaningful as it delved into the complexities and warmth of human connections, a theme that resonated more strongly as it was developed during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic. The story of “Friendship” reflects on the value of our relationships, reminding us of the support and comfort that friends provide during challenging times.
The feedback from audiences has been incredibly rewarding. Many have shared how “Friendship” prompted them to reflect on their own relationships, leading them to reconnect with friends and express gratitude for those bonds. Hearing these stories from viewers, knowing that our work has sparked such personal and positive actions, underscores the impact of our creative efforts.
It’s this connection with the audience, the ability to touch lives through narrative and visual art, that I find most fulfilling. Each story we tell carries the potential to influence perspectives, inspire change, or simply provide comfort, and there’s a tremendous satisfaction in seeing those possibilities come to life.
