Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Lin Sun. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Lin, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Learning the craft is often a unique journey from every creative – we’d love to hear about your journey and if knowing what you know now, you would have done anything differently to speed up the learning process.
I learned how to be a standup comic from taking standup comedy classes with teachers who truly cared about their students. I did everything the teacher told me to do. Open mics, writing, pauses, how to write a joke, how to edit a joke, etc. I paid attention. I went to a lot of comedy shows early on to support fellow comics and learned from the shows. As a single parent, I did as much as I could with the finances that I could afford. I had to win with the cards that are dealt to me.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
Hi everyone! I’m a standup comic and proud single mom. I’m the first Cambodian comic to have a 30 minute comedy special on a major streaming service. I like to say that one of the advantages I have is that I’m single. I don’t have to compromise or “make it work” with a husband/baby daddy. I just do what I want and I raise my son how I want to.
What works for me is that I’m a risk taker. Taking risks is necessary for creatives and success.
It’s taken me awhile to come into my own and fully believe in myself. I work on it everyday. I’ve made tons of mistakes but along with the mistakes, I am proud of myself for my resilience.
I’m not sure what sets me apart from others. I’m just a working class mom doing the best she can to live her dreams and raise her child to become a good human.
I am lucky to be living this life and I believe have everyone can make the decision to live the life of their dreams.
Have you ever had to pivot?
I was going to have my own Late Night Talk show on Roku. We filmed the first 3 episodes and then it flopped! I have no one else to blame but myself because I make the wrong decisions. BUT I’ve come to learn that instead of “blaming” myself, i let myself process the situation, be in a funk if I need to, forgive myself AND understand that sh*t happens in this business. Dust yourself off and try again!
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
Absolutely. When my mom passed away in 2011, I told her that I would carry on our name and live my purpose as an entertainer. I would make people laugh, cry, feel and love themselves more after they watch my shows.
I also want my son to grow up living a good, happy, peaceful life.
