We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Lily Lewis. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Lily below.
Lily , appreciate you joining us today. Let’s start with something countless entrepreneurs have had to figure out on the fly – how have you dealt with the rise of remote work?
I am thankful to have built my business solely around working remotely and being able to travel full-time. Although this has been a great alternative to the corporate 9-5, it still comes with challenges. For instance, since I am not able to talk face-to-face with the people I work with, there can sometimes be communication barriers that need to be worked through in order to complete certain projects in a timely manner. Being able to be flexible and understanding in these situations is a key factor, and working with people on their time schedules always has to be a priority.
Even with a variety of challenges that arise from working remotely and in different time zones, building this lifestyle has been nothing short of rewarding. Having the ability to work anywhere and everywhere is an obvious benefit, but having the ability to learn about different people in different areas of the country was something I was not expecting. There are different ways people do things on the West Coast compared to the East Coast, and being able to learn from them and incorporate it in my work and lifestyle has been a huge unseen reward.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
Back in 2022, I moved into an RV full-time and decided to start traveling the country and seeing all the beautiful things in new and exciting places. Because of this lifestyle change, it became increasingly hard to find a job and work in the various places I lived. That challenge sprouted me to turn to social media and begin the journey of starting my own business. I started posting and working with small brands doing User Generated Content through my Instagram account, @thegoodflaw, all while building my business, Your Social Nomad. With my business, I am able to work 100% remotely, helping people with their small company websites and consulting on their social media accounts all while running my own travel account.
While the biggest goal in my own life is to see and experience as much as possible, I love inspiring others to break away from the standard “live to work” mentality. I like working with people and brands that push to do what they love, even if their means are dubbed unconventional and strange to others. I think that helping people realize that there are other ways to build the life you want other than waiting until you retire is a big driving force to me and being able to help them with website means or social media growth will help them fulfill this.
Does your business have multiple or supplementary revenue streams (like a ATM machine at a barbershop, etc)?
With my business, I have built multiple revenue streams that help me travel full-time. Some of these may be through selling my own photography and UGC to brands, editing clients’ photos and videos for their social media channels, consulting on websites and social media pages for brands, and even writing blog posts and captions for various brands. I think that when running your own creative business, it is important to find new ways to earn money to help drive your mission forward. With my mission being to experience everything and help others build the life they want through their business or even in their daily life, I love exploring new ways to broaden what I do.
How did you build your audience on social media?
While I am still building and experimenting with my own travel-based social media, I think it is essential to learn from others in your field and use other accounts as a resource. You cannot take for granted wisdom from people who are in your field and have been doing what you do for longer. They hold a lot of experience and wisdom. The most rewarding thing for me with my personal accounts is having a community around my social accounts and with various other accounts that I can talk to through those platforms. I am able to ask them for advice, talk about challenges, and hear their stories, as well as know they are hearing mine. Building that sense of community is key, and having valuable content to share with that community will help you grow.
