We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Lilly Davey a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Lilly, thanks for joining us today. Who is your hero and why? What lessons have you learned from them and how have they influenced your journey?
This may sound cheesy, but my mom is my hero, truly. My mom is the most inspirational, supportive person in my life. She hasn’t had an easy life, was a single-mother, and is a cancer survivor. My mom is the bravest, strongest, most amazing person I have ever interracted with. My mom raised me to be the person I am today, she has supported me in everything I have set out to do. My mom has always been my best friend, and still is. She beat cancer just a few years ago, and having gone through that with her, I was inspired by her. She has taught me many lessons in my life, to be brave, to be educated, to be kind, to be loving, and to be understanding, just to name a few. She has influenced my journey all along the way, she is my best friend, I call her about everything!
Lilly, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
My name is Lilly, I got into art when I was young, I come from a family of artists. My grandmother was an abstract artist, and my mother a dancer. I have always loved nature, and flowers especially, I have always been called a flower child for as long as I can remember. I was suffering from my first symptoms of my chronic illness when I was no longer able to work the jobs I was working. I decided when I was dealing with this devastation in my life to make my love for flowers come into play in my art, and then came the birth of my business. I make handmade real flower objects. I have done pieces with ashes, momentos, and wedding and funeral flowers. It brings me great joy to do what I do and be able to provide what I can to make people happy. I am most proud of what I have done in my life to get me where I am today. I am on a journey to continue making life a better place, and to continue making others happy with my creations. I would like to continue with my art and my business in order to support my family and be able to express my art.
How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
I would say that I have had to pivot all of my life in many different aspects. With the business, I have had to go from many orders at the beginning of the pandemic, to slow business as of lately. With careers, I have gone from one avenue to the next. With life, I have made it out of many situations in life that caused trauma for me, but I am surely a survivor! I would say I am constantly adapting and pivoting in life.
Can you open up about how you funded your business?
I started my business from nothing, I was just diagnosed with my condition and had to quit both of my jobs at the time. I then started the business just from a few hundred dollars and kept on building and building the business from there into what it is today.
