We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Lillie a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Lillie, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. So let’s jump to your mission – what’s the backstory behind how you developed the mission that drives your brand?
My mission as a content creator is to show up for the people that look like me, black folks especially. There are so many talents I have, and of course they have dedicated spaces in the world for those said talents. However, the world has not been very kind to people that look like me, and it goes even further: the online world has anonymity. I’m self taught in nearly everything I do, and people find that hard to believe. I’m a realism artist, I’m a full-time streamer, I’m a vocalist who mixes and masters who own music, I’m a cosplayer, and much more.
I face a lot of negativity online, but the great thing is: I deal with it so others that look like me who are just as talented don’t have to be scared. I want to be that role model, I want to be that inspiration that I didn’t have growing up.
Lillie, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
Something that I’m most proud of is my work ethic and ability to stand out despite adversity. I’ve lived a very interesting life with my hardships, but I bounce back like it’s nothing. Obstacles don’t discourage me, they encourage me. I also feel like many people are afraid of judgement, but I’m definitely not. Not anymore, I like to go against the grain and take up spaces with my talents.
Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
The hardest lesson I’ve had to unlearn was that people are not your everything. I used to be afraid of sitting in silence or not always having another person to talk with. That was a sign of deep insecurities, but I ignored it consistently, until I lost a larger portion of my friend group and went through therapy. Friends are not always a forever thing, neither is family. You will be though, so make sure you’re comfortable and secure with yourself so you don’t have to use other people to make up for what you lack.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
The most rewarding part about being a creative is definitely expressing myself as a whole. I’ve always loved the idea of being a star, but having people recognize me at conventions, ask for pictures, and praise me is a whole other level. It feels amazing to be rewarded for expressing myself.
