Hi Lillian, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?

Our journey with Brown Skin Brunchin’ began with a simple desire for connection and community. Melissa and I found ourselves feeling isolated after relocating, longing for a space where women of color could come together, share experiences, and support each other. So, we decided to take matters into our own hands.

We started by organizing small brunch gatherings, inviting friends and acquaintances who shared our vision. The response was overwhelming. Women of color from all walks of life showed up, eager to connect and uplift each other. It was then that we realized we were onto something special.

As word spread, our little brunches grew into something much bigger. We started hosting events around the country, bringing together women from diverse backgrounds and experiences. The sense of sisterhood and empowerment that permeated these gatherings was palpable, and we knew we were onto something much bigger than ourselves.

With passion and dedication, we nurtured Brown Skin Brunchin’ into a global community platform. We launched online forums, workshops, and resources, creating spaces for women of color to thrive, both personally and professionally. Today, Brown Skin Brunchin’ stands as a beacon of empowerment and solidarity, inspiring women around the world to embrace their greatness and support each other along the way. And to think, it all started with a simple brunch and a shared vision for something more.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?

We’ve faced our fair share of challenges along the way, but each obstacle only fueled our determination to keep pushing forward.

One of the biggest struggles we encountered was securing funding and resources in the early days. Starting a community platform from scratch is no small feat, and without the financial backing or connections, it felt like an uphill battle at times. But we refused to let that deter us. We got creative, hustled hard, and leaned on our community for support.

Another challenge was navigating the complexities of growth and expansion while staying true to our mission and values. As Brown Skin Brunchin’ gained momentum, we were faced with decisions about scaling up and reaching more women. It was a delicate balance between staying authentic and accessible while also ensuring sustainability and impact.

And of course, there were the inevitable moments of self-doubt. As women of color in leadership roles, we often found ourselves questioning whether we were qualified or deserving of success. But with the unwavering support of each other and our community, we pushed through those doubts and continued to blaze our own trail.

So, no, it certainly hasn’t been a smooth road, but every bump and hurdle has only made us stronger and more resilient. And looking back, I wouldn’t change a thing. It’s the challenges that have shaped us and our journey with Brown Skin Brunchin’ into what it is today.

What a delightful question! What makes me happy? Outside of my family which is a given, second to that would be seeing the impact that Brown Skin Brunchin’ has on the lives of women of color.

There’s nothing quite like witnessing the transformation that occurs when women come together, support each other, and realize their own power and potential. Whether it’s a heartfelt conversation over brunch or a member sharing their success story, those moments of connection and empowerment fill me with pure happiness.

Knowing that we’re making a difference, however small, in the lives of women around the world—that’s what keeps me going, that’s what lights up my soul. And to me, there’s no greater joy than that.
