We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Lillian Aleece. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Lillian below.
Hi Lillian , thanks for joining us today. If you could go back in time do you wish you had started your creative career sooner or later?
I’m pleased with my journey but I wish I would’ve recorded more songs sooner. My first solo recorded song was terrible and I didn’t record new songs until 2 years after. It was only released it on SoundCloud just to reach friends and family. My two year gap stunted my recording artist growth because I was waiting till it was “perfect”. Creating the “perfect” record is not always realistic nor the goal as an upcoming artist. As I’ve grown, I’ve been more patient in my recording process and given myself grace to grow.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I’m Lillian Aleece, a true southern belle from Alabama that makes dope r&b songs. My true love is songwriting and performing my original songs. I’m often at local venues performing jazz standards and putting my twist on traditional r&b songs.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
There’s nothing more special than feeling like an audience “gets” you. My songs are about personal, real life experiences so there’s intimacy in performing. I get excited when the audience sings along to lyrics I wrote in my bedroom. At my last show, they shared in my chorus chanting ” I wish I could block your number, wish I could start all over, I wish I, I wish we could”, and I almost wanted to cry.
Is there something you think non-creatives will struggle to understand about your journey as a creative?
Non-creatives don’t always understand the sacrifice. We sacrifice money and time mostly. I’ve found myself not taking trips with my non-creative friends because I needed to pay for a music video or photoshoot. As an independent artist, you’re funding your career so you’re constantly investing. You can’t ask someone else to invest in your vision if you as an artist aren’t willing to!
