We were lucky to catch up with Lilith Dead Girl recently and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Lilith thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Did you always know you wanted to pursue a creative or artistic career? When did you first know?
Several years ago, I was working professionally at a dungeon that hosted play parties & events. A coworker introduced me to the idea of performing at one of these events. That was the first time I can recall seriously imagining myself on stage. Alas, life happened, and I wasn’t able to take up the opportunity.
After years of lockdown, I unexpectedly found myself moving from LA to Fort Worth. I set out to reconnect with myself, which requiring immersing in some form of physical & creative expression. I began taking beginner aerial classes at Shine Fitness Studio. A few months later, there were two opportunities to perform in a studio showcase. I signed up in order to have a tangible goal to work towards. That was in June of 2023; My very first burlesque performance. I had never taken a burlesque class before, and had only ever attended one live show. Getting to choreograph for the first time, creating a costume, and then finally hitting the stage was surreal. The moment I got off stage and finishing processing what just occurred, I knew I had found something truly special. My heart could’ve burst.
Lilith, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I’m a burlesque performer, fire eater, freelance model, and glorious deviant. I began performing on a whim, and have persisted since my start in 2o23. My personal performance style can be categorized as neo, gothic & sinful. My background in bdsm made for a natural transition onto the stage. There is an exhilarating energy exchange that occurs between the audience and myself. I have an absolute delight on stage, getting to play both exhibitionist and voyeur. An excited & expressive audience is electric, getting to play voracious voyeurs. I recently began taking my fire eating to stage, and it’s always a rush! My fire nipple tassels are my current favourite prop.
As a freelance model, I love the autonomy in being able to choose which projects I take up. I’ve made some wonderful (and incredibly talented) friends in the process. A few genres I enjoy shooting include fine art nudes/bodyscapes, boudoir, fashion and pin-up. A personal goal this year is to allot more time in my schedule for modeling. I’ve returned to university after a three year sabbatical and work a ‘regular’ job, so it will be a challenge worth facing!
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
It takes a vast amount of work to bring an act to life. It’s a wonderful feeling to feed from the psyche, deliver a performance, and then walk away feeling that you did your absolute best. I’m still slowly unlearning the impractical standard of perfection that I hold myself to. I tend to think of what I could have done better before even acknowledging the highlights. The most rewarding aspect of being a creative thus far has been the overwhelming amount of support & positivity I’ve received from my audience(s). The conversations I’ve had are sacred to me.
My intention with my art, be it poetry or burlesque, is to make people feel. Intensely.
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
I have solid career goals within academia, but I find that my creative journey pertains to navigating & combating the human struggle. Art is what makes life viable. Sure, there’s an element of escapism in being able to shut off the world during a 4 hour photoshoot, but I’d rather acknowledge those hours as time & energy spent transcending the every day horrors of being human. You take part in something much more beautiful.
Everything I work towards within my art is about nourishing my innermost self, and allowing it to exist out in the open. One of the things I appreciate about burlesque is that I don’t have to speak. Getting naked in front of a crowd isn’t nearly as intimate as elaborating for this interview.
