Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Lilia DeWald. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Lilia, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today What do you think matters most in terms of achieving success?
Perseverance. It appears to me that everyone is a real estate agent these days. The marketplace is changing due to realtors not being able to adapt and navigate to accommodate their buyer and seller clients. During Covid we experienced an explosion in sales and this was due to low rates and lots of competition. I had to figure out a way to get ahead of the market and win deals for my clients. I also feel that rejection is a part of life and you can’t just give up after multiple failures. The win is sweet when it happens and you just have to keep moving.
I have been practicing since 2009. It took me three full years in order to create a business that I felt confident about.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I got into the real estate business from watching a real estate agent we had employed to sell a property for us. I thought that I could certainly do just as good it not better than she could. At the time I was a stay at home mother and needed to create a lifestyle that would provide a great work life balance. Real estate sales seemed perfect. That flexibility I desired turned into me relying on friends and family to watch my small children or I would take them along on showings and office meetings when I had to. My kids and their needs were the priority and that assisted in cultivating excellent time management skills which I implement with my clients so we have a more streamlined experience. I do not waste time though the buying or selling process. I created a brand, Dominion Valley Girl, that is a spin on the area I farm and live in to keep me close to home in case the kids needed me during the day. The kids are grown now and I hope they appreciate this 🤣. When I started in the business I interviewed brokerages that had the best agent training because I wanted to be the best for my clients. I am still with the same brokerage I started with in 2009 and I appreciate the support I have received and can then pass along to my clients.
I am continually in the very top 1% of our agents and have developed an amazing client base and most of my business will come from referrals of past clients.
We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
A great lesson is just be authentic to yourself and the rest will fall in line. Nobody can win all the business all the time. If you stay true to who you are at the core of your values, the folks that gravitate towards working with you will make your job that much more enjoyable as you go along in the real estate sales process. It’s been said, if you do something you love you will never have to work a day in your life. Now don’t get me wrong a lot of work does go into creating a thriving business, however I enjoy the relationships I make along the way so much that it feels more like just collecting a network of wonderful people that I hope respect me as much as I respect them. Again my business is referral based so I feel like I have been doing alright!
How did you build your audience on social media?
Social media is tricky. Everyone does the cookie cutter posts. I really came out early on with videos on Facebook and instagram. I created my own lyrics to famous rap songs and put it together with footage from my real estate sales. I have danced in peoples yards to other rappers songs. It’s been fun creating funny and entertaining videos along the way. You can’t take yourself too seriously, but you also have to come off like a professional. It’s a balance. Just be authentic and show a bit of your own personality and those that like you will want to get to know you.
