We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Lil Webb a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Lil Webb, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. What’s been one of the most interesting investments you’ve made – and did you win or lose? (Note, these responses are only intended as entertainment and shouldn’t be construed as investment advice)
The best single purchase I made was my Kaotica Eyeball. It’s an isolator/pop-filter for your microphone. Really helpful for home recording or while on the go and honestly super impactful on how I record music. Knowing I have the freedom to record where ever I want in the world with decent quality is everything for someone like me.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I started singing and taking music classes in middle school and gradually added more to my skillset until I left for college. Majoring in Musical Theater at a NYC conservatory I learned to be a one man army as a performer. With this I’m a singer/songwriter, dancer, actor, vocal producer, and creative developer. What I’m most proud of if being able to get at the core of the creative direction for an artist. Finding what about them & their art truly makes them unique in the creative driven world we live in now, how we can expand that niche, and use that to push forward in a meaningful way.
Alright – so here’s a fun one. What do you think about NFTs?
My personal view on NFTs is they’re pretty useless unless they provide access to an experience for your core fanbase that they can’t get anywhere else. A jpeg isn’t enough and the numbers don’t lie. There’s millions of NFTs and about 300,000 people globally actually own them. So if you had NFTs as a ticket system for an exclusive event that is one thing, but just an image to display on profiles is nonsense.
What can society do to ensure an environment that’s helpful to artists and creatives?
The absolute best way to support an artist is to buy their work! I will never change my stance on this. Art supplies are expensive regardless of the medium whether that be paints, clay, studio equipment/time, etc. If an artist makes something you like they also need a way to fund making more. Nowadays with social media the promotion avenues are the easy part of being a creative. Actually making the art is still just as hard. We just have more knowledge on how to make things. So buy buy buy! On average a single song can cost anywhere from $25-$600, so spending $15 on an album or $1.99 for a single isn’t a lot in the grand scheme of things.
