We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Lil’ Debbi. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Lil’ below.
Hi Lil’ , thanks for joining us today. Do you wish you had waited to pursue your creative career or do you wish you had started sooner?
I started making music officially in 2029, and dropped my first song on my 20th birthday. From then all the way to 2022 I wasn’t really taking my music serious. After I gave birth to my daughter is when I really locked in and began to be more consistent. Looking back on those years not doing anything to now, sometimes I do wish I was working on my music. However looking where I’m at now, I have no regrets. I think back then I wasn’t mentally ready, and I wasn’t sure of myself. I now have full confidence in my music and have mentally and emotionally prepared myself to take on whatever comes with pursuing a music career.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I grew up wanting to be a singer, however in late high school I fell in love with rapping. My younger brother was learning how to make beats and I would sit in the room with him just freestyling and making songs. I think what sets me apart from others in the same field/genre as me is my overall style and subject matter. Hiphop/rap music can be looked down upon because of the topics that are talked about in the music, however I think i’m in a lane of my own. The overall message in my music is to have confidence, be cocky, I want people to feel how I do when they listen to my music. I draw influence from every genre of music that I listen to, to create my own music. And I have a lot of storytelling in my songs, I talk about heartbreak a lot, pain, family issues. I just want people to get to know me through my music because I don’t like to open up unless it’s through a song. I want people to know it’s okay to be vulnerable and you’re never alone.

For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
When a person can relate to me through my music. I love being an artist because it’s a universal language that brings people together.

Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
On the outside looking in people don’t assume that I struggle with a lot, but being a full time single mom can be very hard. Since pushing my music career and being a mom, I’ve faced homelessness, I’ve been unemployed and still was doing everything possible to ensure my daughter has been happy and to make sure I’ve still been able to work on my music. From staying in hotels, to friends houses, to getting my own place and losing it all again to have to stay in a shelter and back with family, I have never let any of that stop me from pursing my dreams, it has only pushed me even more to go harder.
