We were lucky to catch up with Lien Nguyen recently and have shared our conversation below.
Lien, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today How did you come up with the idea for your business?
I’m an artist. I believe in the power of little things. They can bring joy to us just as much as grant things.
When the pandemic started in 2020, many people suffered physically and mentally. I hurted me deeply to see that. I wanted to help out with the little talent I have. At first the idea wasn’t clear. Afterall, what can an artist do to contribute to a deadly pademic, right? It took me along time to develop the product and finding what works best. I’ve always liked cute things because they never fail to make me smile, so why not do that? That’s how the cutestest soaps ever were made. Soaps are very important to keep people clean and safe, with a touch of cuteness to boost your mental health, they were the perfect product in my mind.
As the pandemic slowly goes away, the need of a mood boost never does. That’s why I keep improving my products and coming up new ones. I’m so glad to receive positive feedback from everyone. As I try to make the world more happy, I myself found joy and fulfillment in my own work!
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
I was just a hobbyist soap maker so I have to learn a lot before I can put my products on sale. But the creative aspect of the business came naturally to me. I’ve been an artist all my life. I can remember having a notebook and a pencil with me all the time since I was 5. And just like other artists, I want my art to bring value to life, in one way or the other. My products are silly but practical. They make people smile but also serve a purpose in their life. They are the Fun in Function!
Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
When it comes to social media, there were a lot of trials and errors. It wasn’t easy at first but the most important lesson I learned that changed everything is to connect with your audience. Provide them with something they value, like entertainment or education. Talk about something they care about, make them laugh, and teach them your life hack,… Understanding your audience is important but also let them understand you. Especially for a small business, people want to know the person behind the brand. So showing your authentic self, show your process, how you create things, what you care about, and how you struggle,… That’s how you connect with people on social media.
Have any books or other resources had a big impact on you?
“Purple Cow: Transform Your Business by Being Remarkable” is the book that helped me a lot and I highly recommend this to any creatives out there who want to launch their own brand. It guided me through the process of coming up with a product idea and how to make it stand out.
