We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Libby Tisler. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Libby below.
Libby, appreciate you joining us today. Can you talk to us about a project that’s meant a lot to you?
My most meaningful project to date is my most recent release. I wrote and recorded and released a 6 track EP titled “Hopping Dimensions” all about finding myself and seeking joy, happiness and positivity. It originated from a very vivid dream I had one night and from there, I crafted the songs around it to unfold a coming of age story of sorts. I love the journey that the EP takes you on while listening in order. Emerging from a place of sadness and shifting mindset to seek out a more joyous life.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
Libby Tisler, a Nashville-based indie-pop artist, has always channeled her emotions into her music, perfecting her craft through a straightforward songwriting process: she hits the record button and strums her guitar until something sticks. Her dreamy, indie-pop sound finds beauty in the ordinary, crafting intricate metaphors from the unexpected moments of everyday life. Immersed in dreams and nostalgia, she blends melancholic lyrics with airy harmonies, reflecting on life’s journey. On Friday, September 27, Libby invited listeners to join her on that journey with the release of her debut six-track EP, “Hopping Dimensions.”
Describing the project as a “coming of age story,” Libby begins from a low point in life, illustrating the struggle to emerge from darkness, learn how to cope, let go, and find joy in change. “It almost feels like things are too good to be possible in the same dimension as when things were bad — it feels like you literally hopped dimensions,” Libby explains. “The song ‘Hopping Dimensions,’ which I centered the EP around, actually originated from a dream I had where it felt so real and I wondered if I had actually hopped dimensions in my sleep.” With melodious acoustic guitars, rich background vocals, and deliberate instrumentation, Libby’s main focus will always be the story before her, with the understanding that each listener will extract something different from her writing.
The lead single from Hopping Dimensions, titled “End of An Era” (June 12), embodies the essence of tension in one’s transition before achieving happiness. “I wanted to capture that feeling of anxiety that comes when things are going so well and knowing, inevitably, there will be another point when you’re at another low,” Libby describes. She continues to bring stark imagery to life in the EP’s sophomore track, “The Artist” (July 10), using various artistic mediums to express the agony of heartbreak. Libby’s mournful vocals reach a climax at the bridge, where intensified drumming mirrors the frustration of a turbulent relationship.
On the third single from the EP, “Age of Reason” (August 7), Libby draws from her own experiences of learning how to lift herself up and let go. She continues this theme of using familiar surroundings as symbolism on “Visine,” the fourth and final single, which is a song about finding love (September 4). Libby elaborates, “I can’t see far distances well, so I loved the idea of writing a song about eyes and not seeing the amazing things that were coming, and now having everything be so clear.” With a unique perspective on life, Libby leverages her keen attention to detail to create poignant melodies and joyful rhythms that reflect the ebbs and flows of life.
After a lifetime of playing her dad’s old guitar, Libby took her talents from Rhode Island to Tulane University in New Orleans to study music. Her passion eventually led her to Nashville, where she now resides, spending her days writing between sessions with her producer Alex Bonyata at Blue House Studio. Libby’s insightful perspective on life has guided her through each transition, inspiring her debut project. “I think it’s okay to feel elated and dance in the sun when life feels like summer, and to take the time you need to change and grow when it feels like winter,” she reflects. Libby’s knack for using familiar symbols in profound ways allows listeners to interpret her lyrics uniquely, much like how life’s experiences vary from person to person.

For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
For me, the most rewarding aspect of being an artist is the feeling of writing what I feel to be a really good song. This feeling usually hits me either when I first start a song that I’m excited about or when I finally finish one. It’s such a special and unique feeling turning either an emotion, an experience or a story into something so tangible and artistic.
I love the process of writing and creating and watching it take form from a few chords or one line of a lyric into a whole 3 minute song is so rewarding. Even better is when someone connects to or relates to my music. It feels like a way to form community and feel less alone. Even songs that seem so specific are sometimes how you realize you’re not the only person to feel that way, because someone out there will listen to it and potentially find a way to relate.

What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
I used to feel so precious about the songs I wrote. I had a feeling that I needed to hold on and not share/release them until the right moment. My 16,17,18,19,20,21,22 year old self was convinced that these were the best songs I had and I needed to hold onto them until a label or someone knocked on my door, ready to take me to the top.
For that reason, there are so many songs that I never released because I was waiting for a perfect moment that didn’t come. And now, 8 or so years later, they likely never will be released because I don’t relate in the same way.
Now, I try to release the music that is current and exciting to me and try not to hold myself back by waiting for the perfect moment. I decided that what I love most is to write so, why not release it? I can always write more! And my “perfect moment” is more likely to come as a result of releasing this music rather than come out of thin air.
That and not holding back and being nervous people will judge me for posting my music! I got over that one too!
