Today we’d like to introduce you to Libby Supan .
Hi Libby , it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
Hi! I’m Libby Supan.
Growing up, I struggled in school and internalized the belief that my only path to success was through my appearance and popularity. I felt that my worth was tied solely to my appearance, and I channeled all my energy into that.
This mindset led me down a dangerous path. I began restricting food in high school, starting with small, almost unnoticeable changes—cutting portions and avoiding meals. What began as minor adjustments quickly spiraled into an eating disorder. My relationship with food became obsessive, and I found myself avoiding social situations that involved eating, driven by anxiety and fear.
The turning point came in college. Binge eating took over, and the dining halls became my worst nightmare. I was trapped in a cycle of bingeing and restricting, followed by extreme guilt and overexercise. The pressure to maintain a certain appearance was overwhelming, especially as a lifelong dancer and cheerleader. Eventually, I had to give up cheerleading because I couldn’t keep up with the physical demands due to my fluctuating weight.
My weight changes became noticeable, and the comments from others only fueled my disordered eating. It was a vicious cycle that I couldn’t escape. I knew I needed help, and I began seeking it as a freshman in college. I tried everything—therapists, dietitians, coaches, self-help books, and even joined a cult at one point. But nothing worked, and my insurance repeatedly denied me access to proper eating disorder treatment because I wasn’t underweight.
Through years of persistence, I finally found the help I needed. I recovered and transformed my relationship with food and my body. Today, I live in a world that feels entirely different, but I never forget how consuming the struggle was. I was so preoccupied with food and appearance that I couldn’t focus on anything else.
This experience is why I’ve dedicated my life to helping others. I believe that everyone has unique gifts to share with the world, but disordered eating can prevent you from realizing your full potential. I’m here to support those who are struggling, helping them reclaim their lives and stand in their power.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
The journey has been far from smooth. Recovering from an eating disorder that spanned over two decades was an immense challenge. During my recovery, I grappled with an intense obsession with weight gain, which permeated every aspect of my life. This obsession affected my relationships, making it difficult to connect with others and maintain healthy boundaries. It also impacted my jobs (I had many), as the constant preoccupation with food and body image made it hard to focus and perform effectively. Navigating these struggles required a deep commitment to healing and a radical shift in mindset. These experiences profoundly shaped my approach as a therapist and intuitive eating coach, driving my passion to help others find food freedom and body neutrality.
Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Food Freedom Breakthrough ?
I run both a therapy and coaching practice, specializing in food and body issues such as eating disorders, disordered eating, and body image concerns. For therapy, my clients need to be located in California. I work with individuals and also lead an eating disorder recovery support group for adults. Therapy is a nuanced, private, and personal process, and is very much tailored to each client’s unique needs and experiences.
What sets my practice apart is my commitment to a non-diet, weight-neutral approach. I focus on helping clients build a healthy relationship with food and their bodies, grounded in principles of intuitive eating and body neutrality. Having personally recovered from an eating disorder, I bring a deep level of empathy and understanding to my work. This personal experience, combined with my professional expertise, allows me to connect with clients on a level that fosters trust and real transformation.
Brand-wise, I’m most proud of creating a space where clients feel safe to explore and heal their relationship with food and their bodies, free from judgment or societal pressure. My goal is to empower individuals to break free from the cycle of diet culture and embrace a more compassionate, authentic way of living. I want readers to know that my practice offers a supportive, non-judgmental environment where they can start their journey toward healing and self-acceptance.
For coaching, I have the privilege of working with clients worldwide. I offer individual coaching and my group program, the Food Freedom Breakthrough. This is the newest and most exciting aspect of my business. I offer a free training titled “How Women Break the Binge – Restrict Cycle of Eating so they can Enjoy Every Meal.” It’s designed to guide individuals from living in food and body chaos to achieving peace and harmony. This program is more than just a course—it includes comprehensive coaching, a community, and much more. If this resonates with you, we can set up a strategy call to determine if I can help you.
My practice is entirely virtual, allowing me to reach and help people no matter where they are. What truly sets me apart is that I have personally recovered from an eating disorder. This firsthand experience fuels my passion for the work I do. I’m also a licensed therapist and a certified intuitive eating counselor. My approach is direct yet empathetic, and I always meet my clients where they are, challenging them to grow and recover. The individuals I work with see real progress—they recover.
I’m particularly proud of creating the Food Freedom Breakthrough program. It has taken a significant amount of time and energy to develop an effective approach to combating disordered eating, incorporating both brain re-wiring techniques and psychological insights.
In summary, I offer the following services:
Therapy (California clients only): 1:1 sessions and group support
Coaching (worldwide): 1:1 sessions and the Food Freedom Breakthrough group program
I am deeply honored to work with my clients and am committed to helping them trust me with the most private parts of their lives.
Where we are in life is often partly because of others. Who/what else deserves credit for how your story turned out?
Many people deserve credit for their roles in my journey and the success of my business. My parents have been immensely supportive, providing both emotional and practical support throughout my career. A few close friends and colleagues have also been invaluable, offering encouragement and advice when I needed it most.
However, the most significant credit goes to my clients. They are the heart of my work and the reason I do what I do. Their insights and vulnerability have been instrumental in shaping the specific programs and interventions I offer. My clients motivate me daily, pushing me to create resources that truly address their needs and desires.
Having cheerleaders—both personal and professional—has been the most impactful aspect of running my own business. Their belief in my vision and constant support have been crucial in my journey to where I am today.
