Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Libby Schwers. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Alright, Libby thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Have you been able to earn a full-time living from your creative work? If so, can you walk us through your journey and how you made it happen? Was it like that from day one? If not, what were some of the major steps and milestones and do you think you could have sped up the process somehow knowing what you know now?
I started my business called With Love, Libby in 2020 as a side-hustle while I worked full time at a marketing agency. as a graphic designer. I made soy candles from vintage glassware. I was able to establish a small following by posting on social media, attending craft markets, and making connections with small business owners in my city.
Fast forward to winter 2023. I was still making candles in my free time, but I was no longer feeling fulfilled at my full time job. I always dreamt of turning With Love, Libby into a creative studio where I could focus on my true passion, which is branding. I decided to take the leap. I had a few freelance design clients in the past, but they were all small projects, so I was pretty nervous to leave my job security behind. I took the leap and it’s been the best decision I’ve ever made.
I get to choose who I work with, collaborate with business owners who share the same values as me, and bring brands to life. I think I made the jump at just the right time, even though I knew I wasn’t fully ready. My advice to an aspiring business owner is: you’ll never be ready, so just go for it.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
Hey there, I’m Libby! I’m an Iowa native with a passion for art, design and supporting all my fellow small businesses.
With Love, Libby began as a soy candle company. I’ve always had a knack for thrifting and passion for sustainability, so in 2020, I began making candles from up-cycled vintage glassware. I quickly discovered that I wanted to pursue candle making as a side-hustle, and ultimately turned it into a full-blown creative company where I could focus on my true calling, which is branding.
When it comes to design, from brands to fashion to home decor, I love vibrant colors, funky patterns and mid-century vibes. I think I’ve created a personal brand for myself that is super recognizable and sets me apart from other designers. I truly give it my all to spotlight my clients’ strengths and help them stand out, too.
Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
In 2019, I was diagnosed with a rare neuromuscular disease called Friedreich’s Ataxia (FA). FA is a progressive disease that affects my balance, coordination, speech, among other things. I also have chronic fatigue and need to pace myself throughout the day. In early 2023, after working full time at a marketing agency, I was tired. I felt like going into the office every day was getting to be too much for me, and I couldn’t keep up. I decided to leave my job, which I had previously loved, to pursue my own graphic design business. I needed the flexibility to work from home and give my body the rest it needs. It was a scary decision, but I am so grateful I was able to work up the courage to pursue my dreams AND live with a disability.
Any advice for growing your clientele? What’s been most effective for you?
The best way I’ve been able to grow my business is by showing up authentically on Instagram. I love to engage with my followers and make connections. Friendly banter on social media can quickly turn into business opportunities. Although social media can be toxic if used improperly, it is so powerful when it comes to establishing your personal brand. I like to show plenty of personality in my Instagram stories and posts, and it has gone a long way!
