We were lucky to catch up with Libby Miller recently and have shared our conversation below.
Libby, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. So let’s jump to your mission – what’s the backstory behind how you developed the mission that drives your brand?
I’m so grateful to have a career I love and feel fulfilled in. A lot of times when I’ve told people that I’m a hairstylist or that I’m an extension and blonde specialist, it feels that the beauty business is looked at as a more superficial or materialistic industry. But it’s so much more than that, what I do is about so much more than “just hair”. I provide a truly personalized, luxury experience for my clients. I stay on top of my education and techniques to provide top quality extension and blonde services to my clients to help them feel as beautiful as they are on the inside. We live in a world of social media where so many of us look at these celebrities and influencers and pick apart our looks and it really causes women a blow to their confidence. I’ve had clients come to me after growing their hair out from chemo to get hair extensions, I’ve had some come to me after months and months of neglecting to take time for themselves after having their newborn baby and just want to feel back to their bright, blonde self before they were up to their eyeballs in pump parts and diapers. That feeling of turning my clients around for the first time for them to see their new look and the confidence it instantly gives them is unlike any other feeling. I love helping women feel and look their best. It’s about so much more than “just hair” to me.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
As far back as I can remember, I knew I wanted to have a career behind the chair. Ten years ago I graduated hair school and got licensed as soon as the state of Texas allowed me, then Libby Miller Hair was born. The first five years of my career I spent learning more about the industry and worked on my skills. Then about 5 years ago the majority of my clientele were blondes and I decided on a whim to take an extension certification course. From there everything just snowballed into what my business is today. I’ve furthered my education in both blonding and hair extensions, obtaining more certifications, meeting industry leaders, learning from them, and really taking my craft to the next level. Every appointment in my chair is totally customized to fit each clients specific lifestyle and needs. I’m extremely thorough in my consultations and with educating my clients on the proper maintenance and aftercare. Each new extension installation client goes home with a swag bag of full sized products, a special extension brush, and aftercare instructions. My blonding services are set up as packaged appointments meaning everything is included- color, toners, treatments, trims, & techniques to achieve whatever our goal is. I really want my love and passion for what I do to come across in the meticulous care I put into every client experience.
Where do you think you get most of your clients from?
Social media is huge in the beauty industry! For my business specifically, Instagram has been my bread and butter for attracting new clients. There I have been able to connect with clients that match my personality and find value in the services I offer.
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
About 2 years ago, after a ton of discussion, my husband and I decided to move our young family from our hometown, where I had built an amazing clientele after 8 years of working there, to Mansfield, TX to be closer to his job and allow us to have more time as a family. Shortly after moving I became pregnant with our third and final baby. While I was starting growing my clientele in Mansfield I was still driving back an hour away to my hometown to work on clients there to help cushion my bank account while getting my business name out there. Having 2 kids under 4, with one on the way, while trying to grow my name was such a trying time and extremely humbling coming from a full clientele of being booked out 6-8 weeks. After having our daughter and coming back from maternity leave last fall I decided to take a leap of faith and invested in a business coach that worked specifically with hair extension specialists. That will forever be a turning point in my career. Today, because of that decision, I have the best work/life balance, I’m profiting more across the board in my services, and it’s allowed me to start working on future projects and ideas I have to take Libby Miller Hair even further.
