Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Lib Aubuchon. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Lib, appreciate you joining us today. Owning a business isn’t always glamorous and so most business owners we’ve connected with have shared that on tough days they sometimes wonder what it would have been like to have just had a regular job instead of all the responsibility of running a business. Have you ever felt that way?
A good barometer of how I’m feeling about being a creative entrepreneur is how often I think about becoming an Uber driver. If it’s more than once every three months, I need to make adjustments and remind myself why I’m doing this!
I never imagined I would own a business but now that I’m a few years in, I can’t believe I made a living any other way. I love the flexibility, the independence, the control I have over my own time. To put it another way, I hate being told what to do and working for myself basically eliminates that!
I love knowing that my work genuinely makes a difference in people’s lives. I love knowing my clients make more money, book more work, and have more free time after hiring me. When I have the “Uber driver” thoughts, it’s usually because I’m chasing down a payment, facing slow times (summer and Christmas get me every time!), or feeling overwhelmed by all the work that isn’t creative — like invoicing, scheduling, systems, etc.
Working for yourself isn’t for everyone but if you feel drawn to it, there’s a good chance it’s right for you!

Lib, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
The three-word description of what I do is “I write stuff.” I write website and email copy, articles, blog posts, social captions and more for time-strapped coaches, creatives and consultants. I pride myself on my ability to write in a way that sounds like you, not like me. My clients put a lot of trust in me to put words out there that show them in their best light and I deliver.
I started a blog in 2009 that became sort of locally famous. (Ah, remember the golden age of blogging?) I would have continued blogging as a hobby but one day I was approached in a coffee shop by a reader who asked if she could hire me to write some copy for her design business. I won’t say the rest was history but everything got easier after that because I realized my skills were actually valuable.
I love building an actual relationship with my retainer clients. We almost always get to a point where they say, “Just write whatever you think works here” — a dream come true for a bossy writer-type like me!

Where do you think you get most of your clients from?
Instagram continues to be my number one place to find leads. Insta has its problems, for sure, but it’s a great places to share your values, show a little of who you are, and actually sell your stuff!
Does your business have multiple or supplementary revenue streams (like a ATM machine at a barbershop, etc)?
While I’m primarily a service provider, I also offer a few products like caption and email templates. Working with clients is wonderful. But if you can create something once and sell it over and over — without sales calls, proposals, etc. — do it! Multiple income streams, baby!
