We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Lianis Cruz a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Lianis thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Learning the craft is often a unique journey from every creative – we’d love to hear about your journey and if knowing what you know now, you would have done anything differently to speed up the learning process.
Learning is something i do every single day, passion is trial and error, and with photography this is more than the truth. I truly wish i could have started learning photography and how to be a business owner since that first spark of holding a camera initiated. If i would have done this, i would be much more advanced in my career. I think one of the biggest skills you need for photography is knowing how to work the camera and whatever gear you need to use with it, you also need devotion, with this you can learn a variety of skills needed for the type of photography that captivates you. The biggest obstacle for me is myself, at times you are the only one that stops yourself from growing and learning more.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
Hi! my name is Lianis Cruz, i was born in Cuba and came to America when i was 3 years old. Anyone that knows me, has always seen me taking pictures, it could be with my phone or my professional camera. From a young age i truly knew what my passion was, and i’m so happy i’m doing what i love!. I specialize in couples/weddings, i enjoy every second of taking pictures and seeing my creativeness flourish. I believe that what sets me apart is my simple way of interacting with others and letting my couples shine and capturing their true emotions. I’m most proud of my growth in my imagination and how each day brings me closer to having an amazing business that i always dreamed of. I want my couples to know that i will be there for them from the very start, helping them in any way possible to make them happy. I want everyone to feel truly enamored with their pictures, to see themselves the way i do through my lens.

We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
A lesson i had to unlearn was thinking of how others wanted to see my edited images. This was something i struggled with when i started, i had to learn slowly what my style was, and trust me this changed all the time. I believe a style can be expressed in different ways when you edit, but now my main focus is how i perceive my pictures, i will always edit how i would like so when i look at my work i can truly say WOW, I ABSOLUTELY LOVE THIS!.

What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect of being an artist is having the opportunity to gravitate people towards you that truly appreciate your vision, passion and hard work.
