We recently connected with Lexy Zuniga and have shared our conversation below.
Lexy, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. We’re complete cheeseballs and so we love asking folks to share the most heartwarming moment from their career – do you have a touching moment you can share with us?
In 2019, I was at the height of my career, having just started my own nutrition and fitness business, training clients, helping mentor people on how to live a balanced lifestyle. And then I found out I was going to become a mom. I was afraid and actually felt like I was going to lose my chance at being a successful trainer, business owner, and mentor. While my training had to take a little bit of a backseat, I studied perinatal fitness and got my certification so I could help other mamas like myself.
After having my beautiful daughter during the height of COVID through an emergency c-section, I figured coaching and training would take a little longer to get back into, but I didn’t expect to go through what I did. Not long after giving birth, I was diagnosed with postpartum depression, my relationship with my daughter’s father diminished, and my recovery did not go as I had expected.
I knew I needed to do something to get out of my funk, so about 6 months after giving birth, I started training again and I started working with an amazing coach myself. While this helped me mentally and physically for the first few months, I still felt empty and not where I should be.
Fast forward to May of 2021, I had separated from my daughter’s father and by August had moved to LA to help care for my grandma whose health was failing. It was then that I was introduced to a health and wellness company. I took a leap of faith and decided to work with this company and in mid-August I traveled to Utah for my first convention with the company that would change my life.
I met so many amazing people, but one specifically that would make such a HUGE impact in my life and career, Jovon “Q” Quarles—retired Navy SEAL of 22 years. After Utah, we kept in communication long distance (he was in Vegas and I was still in LA). We both were very active in our health and wellness company and I was training again, so things were looking up a little.
In February of 2022, my grandma who was living with us, passed away on hospice and I again felt like my life was in turmoil. At this point, Jovon had been working on a huge project and asked me to be a part of it. While overwhelmed with the heartbreak of losing someone so close to me, we decided to launch our own business in March 2022, Elite SEAL Fit, focusing on coaching, training, and nutrition. This was a light at the end of the tunnel for me. I finally felt like I got a second chance at being able to do what I love and to become a successful coach, business owner, and mentor.
Through all of this, Jovon and I found ourselves to be more than just business partners. We’d both grown to appreciate, respect, and love one another. As of today, we run a successful business AND have a thriving, loving relationship. We are finally coming back to San Diego to take ESF and our lives to the next level. We will now be able to train, mentor, and coach our clients in person, while getting to have the freedom to spend time with my daughter and grow our family.
Taking a leap of faith while my life was in shambles was probably the best thing I could have done. Our business, our relationship, and our family is thriving and we can’t wait to help as many people as we can to become the best versions of themselves—whether that’s through health, nutrition, fitness, or mentorship. Needless to say, the comeback was WAY bigger than my setback.
Lexy, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I first got into personal training and coaching in 2015 after I got done with my second fitness competition. I wanted to be able to help individuals to become healthier and happier in their own skin. While I was training, I decided to go to school for dietetics and nutrition and graduated with my bachelors in 2018.
Now, my boyfriend, Jovon, and I own and run our own fitness and nutrition business where we do online, virtual, and in person training as well as offer nutrition programs. We have packages for all levels: beginners, advanced, and everything in between. We will be launching our clothing line at the beginning of next year, so be on the lookout for all Elite SEAL Fit gear!

Do you think you’d choose a different profession or specialty if you were starting now?
Even with the early mornings and long days, I would choose coaching, training, and mentorship over and over again. I love what I do, especially being able to help others improve their lives. It gives me such purpose and fulfillment that I can’t imagine doing anything else.
Other than training/knowledge, what do you think is most helpful for succeeding in your field?
Being coachable and networking are EXTREMELY helpful. Even if you are very knowledgeable in your field, there are others who know more than you. And if those individuals are willing to mentor you, being able to receive and apply the information given is going to be pertinent in your business.
Also networking and meeting other people are going to be helpful in expanding your business into making other connections.
