We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Lexx Strickland . We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Lexx below.
Hi Lexx , thanks for joining us today. Risking taking is a huge part of most people’s story but too often society overlooks those risks and only focuses on where you are today. Can you talk to us about a risk you’ve taken – it could be a big risk or a small one – but walk us through the backstory.
Going into business for myself was an automatic risk. Luckily, I had my mother helping pay for daycare expenses temporarily but everything else was on me. Everyone kept telling me I needed to keep a part time job to secure some type of income, but I was hard headed and totally against that idea. I wanted to make myself 100% available to my clients. If they needed me there at 8am or 8pm I could be available and not working around someone else’s schedule. I’ll never forget that my first month in business I made about $500 that month. I can now make that in a day. I still have my bad days, bad weeks, even bad months. But being on my own schedule and being able to be there for my kids is what’s most important to me.
Lexx , love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I started back in October 2017. I decided to set up shop inside of someone’s salon so I could build some clientele until my best friend opened her own shop in February 2018. Needless to say, me and the shop owner had a dispute and she took every single one of my products from me. Over $2,000 worth of items which was my last dollar. That did not stop me though! I was officially back in business February 2018 and my mindset was unstoppable. I offer a wide selection of facials, full body waxing, teeth whitening, tooth gems, brow & lash tinting, skin lightening, microdermabrasions, and more! I love what I do and I absolutely love meeting different people. I absolutely love the relationships I’ve gained with my regular clients. I moved to Charlotte in March of 2022 and of course my business came with me. It’s been a struggle getting new clients, but I knew it would be an obstacle I would face before I even moved. I knew if I could start a successful business in Greensboro then I could do it anywhere else!
How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
I am currently going through a pivotal change in my business since I have moved to Charlotte. Like I mentioned before, I knew it would be tough before I even moved but it was something I was ready to do. I am continuing my esthetician journey but I am also branching out into Real Estate which I’m super excited about.
How did you build your audience on social media?
Word of mouth is everything! When I was first starting out I would reach out to people when I saw they were celebrating a birthday and i would offer them 50% off any one service for their birthday month. I only had to do this for 6 months before my schedule started getting pretty full.
