We recently connected with Lexi Sanchez and have shared our conversation below.
Lexi , thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Are you able to earn a full-time living from your creative work? If so, can you walk us through your journey and how you made it happen?
I started working full time in my creative work around the summer of 2020. I was working an office job that wasn’t bringing me joy, and I honestly kind of experienced a moment where I realized that I don’t want to keep doing anything besides what I love; making art. In the beginning it was a big leap of faith.. I didn’t have a lot of cliental and I had to push my work on socials an embarrassing amount haha. But the more I created, the more I put myself out there (both myself personally and my work) the more relationships I made and work I received. I had to do a lot of really cheap shoots and sometimes free shoots just to build my portfolio but some of those shoots were key in helping me build my platform to what it is today.
Knowing what I know now, I would’ve told myself in the past to go to as many photo/art events as possible. Ask more questions from other creators. Learning from others that Ive built friendships with who are also working in the creative industry has been one of the biggest factors that has contributed to my growth.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
My name is Lexi Sanchez! Im 26 years old, and Im a freelance photographer, illustrator and aspiring filmmaker. I mainly shoot photography these days (digital and film) but I love filmmaking as well! I have been doing a lot more wedding films these days. I feel like the wedding film world can be so stagnant and repetitive- always following the same format. So my partner and I have been working towards creating wedding films that feel much more personal and cinematic- breaking as many rules as we can! Its been a fun journey this past year doing that, and seeing the positive response from others has been really encouraging.
Going back to photography- I mainly do personal shoots for artists, couples, brands, and sometimes weddings as well! I have been wanting to tap more into the fashion world, and definitely hope to get more into that this year.
My goal with my artwork is to constantly evolve and explore the possibilities of the craft. I never want to just settle and recreate aesthetics because its popular and I know people will like it. I want to constantly push myself and take risks, but at the same time, have work that feels honest and personal. I love challenging myself in that aspect and I so value the trust clients give me when they bring projects to me.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
Creating art is an essential part of living for me. It makes existing in this world so beautiful and worthwhile. But more than that, meeting other incredible and beautiful people in these spaces who I can share this passion and love with adds to it ten-fold. The friends I’ve made since becoming an artist full time, have become some of the dearest friends Ive ever had.
Is there mission driving your creative journey?
My long term goal is to be a filmmaker! Specifically be a director and writer for films. <3
