We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Lexi Gail Cummings . We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Lexi Gail below.
Lexi Gail, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Can you tell us a story about a time you failed?
As someone who struggles with chronic illness – the ability to complete even the most basic of tasks is hard, let alone to hold down a full time job and pursue music full time as well. Because of my personal health struggles and love for comfort items like candles and body products, I’ve discovered just how harmful it is to my body to use things with toxins. I have failed several jobs, missed many opportunities musically, etc because my body has been holding me back. But out of what seems like inevitable failure that will never end, I decided to start my own company. The hope is that I will be able to create products that make people happy, healthy, and at the same time become my own patron of sorts. Had I not struggled so much, I never would have discovered my love for creating things by hand or found another way to make my dreams come true that I believe will make much more of a positive difference in the world.
I am still very much so in the beginning stages of owning my first business and so mistakes are inevitable, but I am ecstatic to see where the future takes me. :)
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I am a missional artist! By that term, I mean this – a singer/songwriter that aims to use my platform for the benefit of others. I have a heart for many things such as the homeless, foster children, the disabled, the mentally ill, elderly folks. My hope is that by the traction I receive pursuing music, I can work with existing groups who support these missions by working to create community and bring awareness to people who are already doing the amazing and hard work of making the world a better place. This effects everything I do from how I look at finances to the places I perform. Everything I do will be through the lense of helping those who need it most while giving my followers ways to connect and support causes around them.
I hope that the people attracted to my music are people that appreciate authenticity, lyrics, self-growth, and honesty. I hope that the people attracted to my music are also attracted to my mission of making life better for those who can’t fight for themselves.
How do you keep in touch with clients and foster brand loyalty?
On the candle side and the music side, I often do give aways and discount codes! During holiday seasons I add extra scents and provide codes to make my items more affordable. As a musician, I do gift cards, custom artwork give aways, and more! I do my best to always respond, to participate in events and podcasts that my long time fans will reach out to me about, and to just be an active supporter in their lives!
Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
As a singer and songwriter, I had to unlearn many things growing up. Surrounding topics of weight, appearance, and the ways to climb to the top. I always gravitated towards comfortable attire when performing; things like sweatshirts and jeans. I never wear makeup and even when I used to, I didn’t enjoy it much. I feel much more at ease and like myself having the freedom to choose when I want to put a look together and when I want to show up as just me in simple form. I have also struggled with my weight due to my health issues and it is out of my control- so that has been hard. I’ve had people make comments on all of these since I got into my 20’s and at the same time, I’ve seen so many other incredible artists prove that you can make a career as an independent. You can gain your own traction and make your own rules. You can choose to embrace what makes you yourself. I still work to accept myself daily and to make sure I know who I am becoming so that I can represent it in my music. This will be a life long journey, but be encouraged that there is space for everyone in the music industry. Be you!
