Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Lexi Crystal. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Lexi, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Let’s start with the story of your mission. What should we know?
Lexi Crystal Artistry aims not just to amplify the inherent beauty in women of all shades, but to also instill a profound belief in the beauty that resides within each of our clients and customers. Our commitment lies in nurturing and boosting a woman’s confidence, irrespective of her complexion or skin type.
In my early years of makeup artistry, I had a plethora of clients with beautiful chocolate-toned skin who would share with me their unpleasant experiences in beauty. They’d tell me they could never find an artist who’s work truly complimented their complexion without making them ”too orange” or “ghostly”. Even to this day, I occasionally still work with clients who have similar experiences. Empathizing with their struggles, I recognized the significance of looking and feeling your best on special occasions such as birthdays, weddings, and business meetings. The uncertainty of how one’s face is perceived during such memorable moments, can be disconcerting.
Motivated by a desire to bridge this gap, I committed to furthering my expertise in makeup artistry, while creating a company focused on empowering women to feel beautiful in their own right by providing the necessary tools and support and ensuring that individuals feel confident and radiant for all their special moments!

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
Lexi Crystal, a makeup artist based in Charlotte, North Carolina, specializes in creating soft, natural, and flattering glam for women of all shades.
Her journey in the world of makeup began at the age of 16 when she picked up her first makeup brush. From that point on, she immersed herself in experimentation, often using close friends as her muses. Lexi firmly believed in the adage that practice makes perfect and was determined to discover her signature style. Today, she stands as a professional makeup artist, continually honing her craft and serving her delightful clients.
While many inquire about the role of YouTube in her journey, Lexi acknowledges its influence but emphasizes that her hands-on approach was more instrumental. As a tactile learner, attending makeup classes and consistently practicing diverse techniques proved more beneficial than online tutorials.
Although glittered eyes, cut-creases, and dramatic looks have their allure, Lexi finds herself captivated by classic, timeless enhancements. She is drawn to the kind of look that transcends trends and remains ageless. “Simplicity is key” is not just a motto for Lexi; it’s a philosophy she lives by and seamlessly incorporates into her artistry.

Can you open up about how you funded your business?
Throughout my journey, I always secured part-time employment to finance both my kit and the startup expenses for my business. Typically, my part-time roles were in restaurants or retail, demanding 20-25 hours per week. Beyond the advantage of multiple income streams, I was fortunate enough to have a strong support network within my family. Before acquiring a commendable kit for client visits, my parents played a pivotal role financially to the development of my kit. The success of Lexi Crystal Artistry owes so much to my unwavering parental support. Balancing a secondary job with earnings from client services, coupled with the steadfast encouragement from my parents, played a crucial role in bringing my business to its current position.

What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
A crucial lesson I’ve learned on my entrepreneurial journey, and a reminder I occasionally reinforce within myself, is that the responsibility for my success or failure rests solely on my shoulders and no one else’s. Another facet of this lesson is recognizing that achieving success demands effort and the discipline to fulfill the requirements of my business, even when motivation is lacking. Regrettably, there were many instances throughout my MUA journey where without putting in the work, there was no return on investment (ROI). Prior to any returns, it was crucial to invest in my business, as without that initial investment, there was no opportunity for an ROI to materialize.
