We were lucky to catch up with Lexi Algar recently and have shared our conversation below.
Lexi , appreciate you joining us today. So let’s jump to your mission – what’s the backstory behind how you developed the mission that drives your brand?
My name is Lexi Algar, and I am the CEO, executor, director, social media manager, producer, and starring talent of my own personal brand as an Independent Artist.
As a singer-songwriter my ultimate mission is to cultivate community and provide an authentic connection to my audience. If I can offer inspiration, relief, or happiness to even one listener; I think I could be happy with that. I believe that through my boldness and brutal honesty that other people will feel free to uniquely express themselves. Whether I am singing a moving ballad or a heavy uplifting tune, I hope that my music can spark conversations that can bring groups of people together to live beyond coexisting.
As an independent artist- meaning being free from a record label or being financially backed and indebted to an entity- I have full power and control over my creative endeavors, but lack a financial return that record label backed artists usually have. How I offset that financial loss is by working actively as a cover singer-guitarist. I get contracted individually to work with companies and agencies and get paid to sing well-known music of other artists at events. This helps me live and sometimes even financially fuel the pursuits of what it takes to be an artist; funding music videos, live shows, traveling, producers, and any outsourcing that I would need. Furthermore, as a company, my mission is to close the gap between getting paid to sing other people’s music and playing my own shows full time. All of this to promote my mission of connecting with people and inspiring them to connect with others. The more love I can foster in the world the better, and more complete my mission will be.
To be an independent artist in the music industry along with being the CEO of my personal brand can be very daunting. In a normal company- there are separate people fulfilling each role, you have more minds, and more support than just you. However, when your passion for human connection and expression as an artist is tenacious, you never truly quit. Even if you do for the day, you get up the next day and prepare for the next project or adventure.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I have known I have wanted to be a singer as early as I could form memories. I was always infatuated with being on stage, performing for people, and the groove that every music had. I loved the way a song could effortlessly convey a feeling and influence the feelings of others. I had started teaching myself to sing, play guitar, piano, cello, and ukulele; along with playing viola in the school orchestra as a child. I began writing music at the age of 10, and by 15 I wrote the song I had decided to be my debut single. The song did not get a chance to be released until just recently in 2022 titled ‘Words of Wisdom’. I started working full time as a singer two years ago after my minimum wage job declined to let me take time off to see my family for Christmas. I had about three months rent in my savings and gave myself a deadline to replace the job if I couldn’t get any singing jobs started in about two. I took the leap. I printed business cards and left them with businesses in the trendiest parts of town where I knew live music would be the most desired after coming out of the pandemic. I got one job, then two, and the rest followed. All of my cover show jobs have been cultivated in the last two years and all have been made by word of mouth.
As a cover singer, I am regarded very highly and known for my versatility. I sing music from all genres, time periods, and artists. I have sang about every different kind of event and in many settings; funerals, weddings, in restaurants, baby showers, birthdays, in shopping centers, going away parties, anniversaries, and even corporate events. I love what I do and the entertainment services I provide to people. Every single person that hires me for an event, pays me, and helps me release my own music. They fuel my passion.
Are there any books, videos, essays or other resources that have significantly impacted your management and entrepreneurial thinking and philosophy?
A book that I really connected with as a person, beyond being an entrepreneur, business owner, singer, and musician; is the book Think and Grow Rich by Napolean Hill. It was recommended by the singer Lana Del Rey that I heard via a podcast. Once you dissect the contents you realized that the book has little to do with growing riches and acquiring wealth, and everything to do with success mindset and achieving your goals. The ideology can be disassembled and applied to all topics you wish to pursue no matter what your life or business goals may be.
How did you build your audience on social media?
I have found much success with social media and really love the growth that I have come into as business owner. It especially helps that I am my brand’s identity as well. Many things that I do as a business owner can be considered social media content worthy. I noticed that the platform Instagram has really helped me cultivate a community following and is a great hub for all updates and news that my clients and/or fans can use to check in on me. It is a platform that satisfies the aesthetic and informative needs of both the follower and the business owner.
