We recently connected with Lex Moore and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Lex , thanks for joining us today. Before we get into specifics, let’s talk about success more generally. What do you think it takes to be successful?
I think for me, what has caused me to be successful in my personal and professional journey has been the ability to visualize my end goal (being a well-known photographer and videographer) and take the necessary developmental steps to achieve it. This time last year I had just gotten back from Indonesia and Japan, where I worked on a videography and photography internship in the small town of Kedu. Now, after traveling around for the vast majority of 2023, I am finetuning my process by gaining academic and professional experience in the field. I went back to school to take classes on photography, videography, and business, and I am looking forward to attending graduate school in the near future to gain further networking opportunities. While I know my niche, I also believe success lies from being true to yourself as well and staying as authentic as possible. One of my senior photo sessions, I was able to make a nervous and shy client blossom into one who was giggling and could visibly evoke happiness, giddiness, and excitement about her future. Therefore, humor and connecting with my clients through relatable moments drives this point home and allows me to expand my brand.

Lex , before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I am a content creator that specializes in travel, photography, and videography, while still offering some personal elements such as humor and relatable anecdotes through instagram, threads, and tiktok. I quit a job I was rather burnt out in back in 2022, then 4 days later headed to Canada to celebrate my brother’s birthday and ring in the New Year. Four days after returning from that, I packed up a backpack in early 2023 and embarked on a videography and photography internship in rural Indonesia for a month. I traveled multiple places since, posting on both my personal and professional instagrams, Tiktok, and a little bit of threads, gaining a brand and following of likeminded individuals. Since returning back home, I have offered photo sessions frequently, and plan to rebrand and separate my photography into its own Instagram page. I am also taking classes to fine tune my skills and set my creative process apart from others. I think what sets me apart from other photographers is that I have photographed all around the world as a young, beginner photographer, and now that I am growing professionally the skill can only grow as well. The main thing I want people to know about my brand is that I find beauty in pictures and places all around the world, and we have the opportunity to create a wonderful project together to bring magic to your town and lives.

Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
A lesson I had to unlearn was to allow yourself to fail. To start as a beginner again. To face judgement and criticism and grow from it. When I first picked up a camera, I was a confused ex-teacher who was trying to find some purpose. I blindly photographed without a story to illustrate or a vision in mind, and I was scared to be innovative and try new things. I remember distinctly trying to photograph a waterfall in Indonesia, and I was trying to get the water without splashing my camera. In the process, I kicked my water bottle off a cliff into the river. I didn’t notice until my boss went into the water to grab it. I had the opportunity to photograph the ripples he made in the water or the water bottle floating, but I was focused on taking photos of the waterfall instead. Now that it has been a year since starting in this industry, I am noticing that I played it too safe starting out and my photos have since led to more daring outcomes.

Is there mission driving your creative journey?
My goal and mission for this creative journey is to help redefine videography and photography into a collective enterprise for myself that is distinct—I want my clients to recognize my work but acknowledge that my technique for connecting with my clients is on a more personal level—we will laugh and joke, brainstorm together, and understand the collaborative process as a team. I would love to become the next Banksy or Greta Gerwig for my work, but my mission is to include my network and build from there personally and professionally in order to achieve true greatness in this industry.
