We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Lex Merico . We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Lex below.
Alright, Lex thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. What do you think it takes to be successful?
To be successful, it takes consistency and love. I love what I do and I work on my craft everyday. I am nowhere near where I want to be yet, but ultimately I think to be successful, means to change your perspective. Being happy at whatever stage i’m at in life and trusting myself and my journey, I think is what truly makes one successful.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I started photography at 22 years old, during my third year of college. I bought my first camera after attending one semester at a film school and within the first week I had discovered I had a true gift that would forever change the course of my life. Over the next year I had completely immersed myself into photography and got very comfortable with the creative industry in my city. With the belief in myself and from my community, I had started to make a name for myself. Now, 6 years later I have honed in on my niche as a creative fashion and lifestyle photographer. I create lifestyle content for brands, fashion editorials for magazines, art work for music artists, and travel the world doing what I love most.
I am most proud of how much I love to learn. I am always asking questions, always seeking more knowledge, studying, surrounding myself with people who I admire and taking in as much as i can to apply it in my own way. There are a lot of things I have learned about myself and how to deal with all types of people and situations. Being a business owner is being a problem solver. I want potential clients to know that when you hire a photographer, you aren’t just getting someone to take pretty photos. You’re investing in an artist. And if you treat the artist with love and care, the work we produce will be that much better.

What’s been the most effective strategy for growing your clientele?
I have my work on almost every photography portfolio/job/recruiter website out there. I’ve gotten several big gigs from these types of sites, but often times they’re either not in my niche, or are just one off jobs. I currently work with several creative agencies, and I do a lot of lifestyle photography work for their clients. However I think word of mouth recommendations (with my instagram as the deciding factor), are my number one source for new clients. So I would say the most effective strategy for growing your clientele is to constantly put out the type of quality work that you want to get paid for, and just build a good reputation.

How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
I think more than just putting out consistent quality work, having good energy on set and creating good relationships with people has helped me build my reputation. Im always true to myself, and the work I put out is stuff that makes me feel good, and I think that resonates with people.
