We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Lex Abshire a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Lex, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. What do you think matters most in terms of achieving success?
What I think it takes to be successful all depends on what you define as success. I think the best place to start is defining what that looks like for you and making tasks that accomplish that goal. So the level of effort, work, skills, etc will vary based on the what this idea of success is for you. That being said one thing is unavoidable within that goal of success. You need to have discipline. You need to be able to self start yourself to accomplish the tasks that bring you closer to your goal. You need the discipline to be able to hold yourself accountable and take responsibility for when the tasks aren’t being accomplish and your goal isn’t getting closer to becoming achieved.
In my experience being able to have the discipline has given me the edge of many of my competitors in the industry. This resulted in me being able to work harder, faster, and more efficient in my industry. The discipline I had to stay on top of my tasks lead to me keeping the main goal I was chasing of success always in my view. Everything always led to the word discipline and I constantly worked on that being my guide for anything I wanted in life.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I’ve been a creative from my early years as a kid. I was always into creating something and when Youtube came around it gave me a place to create even more into a format that I really enjoyed. It wasn’t until around 2020 that I began to dive more into wedding videography specifically and it couldn’t have been a better fit for me. Once it took off, it felt like it never landed and has only been up since then.
My love and passion for creating has lead me to my place now. The discipline I’ve built up over the years of my life has really lead to my success that I have now. Between those two things of loving my job and keeping the discipline I need to keep finding new levels of success in this industry has led me to an incredible journey.
The thing that really separates myself from others in the industry is the ability to not make my creative problems any of my clients problems. As a creative in the wedding industry it can quickly become more about the art than it is about serving the client. We are in a service industry and many forget that. I’m always asking myself “how can I better serve my client” more than I am thinking how can I create art even though the product’s quality and level of skill is still important. The magic really happens when you can accomplish both every time.
Is there mission driving your creative journey?
At this point it’s not so much the end goal any more that drives me. I’ve already won in many ways. I don’t live paycheck to paycheck anymore. I have a good family home, I can live comfortably and provide for my kids, and much more. The drive and passion I feel now feels like it comes from a deeper place that is always there and never burns out. I’m in love with the grind and the journey. The everyday tasks and knowing that these things collectively are moving the needle. Sure, I have another end goal of what I’m trying to accomplish for my business but I’m enjoying every part of chasing it. This is what drives me in my creative journey.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
The people hands down are the best. The fact that I’ve been able to pair up being a creative with one of the most social events out there has been an incredible journey. I meet so many new people all across the world in beautiful destinations. I get to provide people with something that they will enjoy for the rest of their lives and even to their kids. The appreciation that everyone gives me is just constantly giving me purpose. It’s not doubt for me that the people make it the best job ever.
