We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Leurisa Watson a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Leurisa, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Naming anything – including a business – is so hard. Right? What’s the story behind how you came up with the name of your brand?
I named my business after our angel baby. In July 2016, I delivered my third baby girl sleeping. She was our perfect little angel. Losing her changed my perspective on life and taught me that I needed to start doing things that really interested me and made me happy. A couple of years later, I left corporate America and went to culinary school. I named my chef business after her, Jadyn Rose, to offer a way to keep her name and her memory alive.
Leurisa, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I am the owner and chef of J Rose Events, LLC. I’ve always had a passion for cooking from following my mom around in the kitchen when I was younger to taking home economics in high-school. In 2018, I decided to finally pursue this passion. On a leap of faith, I went to culinary school and started my business.
I provide private chef, event chef, and catering services. I am also a self-taught baker, and in my spare time I teach cooking classes.
I create customized experiences for every customer. They get the meal of their dreams, prepared delicately from scratch with the best quality ingredients. I sell happiness and love on a plate. I like to think that not only do I feed your belly, but I feed your soul as well.
We’d love to hear about you met your business partner.
The story of how I met my co-founder/business partner is a love story. We met many many years ago on a random college trip. We sparked a connection and became friends. Eventually, that friendship turned into a deeper connection and we fell in love. Here we are today, married for 12 years (together for 15) with 3 beautiful, amazing living daughters. I couldn’t have asked for a better partner. When I wanted to leave the corporate world and make a career switch, he supported me. He has been my biggest champion throughout this entire thing. He encourages and motivates me. I don’t think any of this would have been possible without him.
What’s been the most effective strategy for growing your clientele?
Word of mouth has been the most effective strategy for growing my clientele. I am a stranger coming in to people’s homes, so they always feel more comfortable when someone they trust has referred me. It brings me comfort as well. I make sure to stay professional and not only meet, but exceed my client’s expectations and needs so that they are willing to refer me to others.
