We recently connected with Leslie Wilmer and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Leslie, thanks for joining us today. Let’s kick things off with your mission – what is it and what’s the story behind why it’s your mission?
The mission behind sharing this book with as many who will read it, is to encourage parents, guardians even educators who deal with parents. I want to provide an outlook and perspective centered around parenting that may not be considered.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
Leslie Wilmer is a wife, mother and educator. Currently residing in the state of Maryland, and she is a high school teacher. As a native Washingtonian she was educated in D.C. private schools, graduated and attended Lincoln University, in Pennsylvania obtaining a BS degree. Having a heart for young people of all ages for over 45 years she has had a gamut of experiences. One is becoming an author.
The book Parenting from Behind the Bedroom Door is an outlook based on Leslie Wilmer’s experiences both maternally and professionally. This book can be used as a guide or reference for someone who may be unsure or unclear about how they should proceed as a parent. Her experiences as a child formed many strong feelings regarding how adults should treat children. Her experiences have shaped her as a parent, and she shares several of them in this book. In one form or another. Dive into this insightful, funny, and lighthearted book to learn more about her life experiences as well as some tools that will assist you in becoming the parent you would like to be.

Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
As a parent, I have had to pivot many times.
I once created the notion that I wanted to make my son feel special, I
decided to communicate this by cutting the crust off the bread of his sandwiches. I took care to
package his lunch with the items he liked, making sure he would have the proper portions that
would fill him up and provide nutrition. After a week of this “special lunch” my son asked me
“Why do you keep cutting the crust off my bread, I LIKE THE CRUST?!” I listened and stopped cutting the
crust off his sandwiches. I demonstrated someone else’s idea of what caring looked like. Maybe I had seen a movie or television show demonstrate what “caring” should look like, not giving too much consideration to what my son really wanted. This experience allowed me to be more aware of each of my childrens’ needs realizing that they are individuals too.

What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
I originally started journaling my thoughts about what “parenting” should look like when I witnessed the parenting skills of a few family members – as I wholeheartly disagreed. Rather than approach them with my opinion, suggestions or critique, I decided to
write about it. I then realized my (continued) journey as a parent and wrote even more. This book is really a love letter to all parents regardless. I would like everyone to read the book regardless of where they are in the parenting journey and if they are not parents. This information is best-seller material- if I must say so myself
