We recently connected with Leslie White and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Leslie, thanks for joining us today. Talk to us about building your team? What was it like? What were some of the key challenges and what was your process like?
Initially the business started as a solo endeavor. I would take bridal parties sometimes but always brides as they were my focus. I would travel all over the state for multiple brides in a day but really didn’t offer services to the wedding parties until I had to keep turning them down. My first logic was to hire out trusted stylists I worked with to help. Once it became a frequent enough request I put out a search on Facebook for artists. I was able to interview stylists and makeup artists. I got a feel of their personalities and goals in the beauty industry as well as any weaknesses they might have had to improve on. With the desire to grow and learn I was able to show these artists what I had learned in my bridal experience and we became a tight nit team. After 12 years of weddings I can proudly say the team has grown from Just Indiana to all over the Midwest and we now serve Colorado as of 2021.
I am able to be more choosy on who I hire but my hiring process remains the same of a working interview.
Leslie, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I am Leslie White, owner of the traveling wedding company that offers hair and makeup services to clients all over the Midwest and Rocky mountains. My company Indie Bridal Co focuses on timeless beauty to clients that want to look and feel their best. We do not change your looks but enhance who you are as an individual. As an inclusive company we strive to service the underrepresented individuals in the wedding community. We want you to feel as important, radiant and special as the “style me pretty” models you see on wedding magazines. Whether you are a beauty pro or novice we treat you with great care and respect no matter who you are.
Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
I had to unlearn that everything is a competition for work. I grew up in a larger city where it was eat or be eaten mentality. Client stealing, no loyalty or respect of others in your field. When I moved to a smaller town I quickly discovered how much of a jerk I was to continue to have that thought process. People in the smaller town were eager to share their clients to help me get my business growing. I loved that mentality and learned that that there is plenty of work to go around and its best to be friends with your “competitors”. Now I encourage with my artists and the vendors around me in the wedding industry humble professionalism and community outreach. The bonds are so much stronger and the support is incredible.
What’s been the best source of new clients for you?
The most consistent way we get our clients is by word of mouth. Our reputation goes a long way when a previous client sings our praise to their friends. When a new client reaches out to us and says “i was in ____ wedding and loved the services you did on me” or “You did my neighbors wedding and they spoke so highly of you.”
