We recently connected with Leslie McCotry and have shared our conversation below.
Leslie, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. We’d love to hear your thoughts about making remote work effective.
Remote work is how my business thrives. As long as I have my laptop, I can work anywhere which gives me the flexibility to write a blog post on the beach or edit a web page at the airport.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I love to travel! I feel most at home when I’m far away and I enjoy watching my boys learn when they travel with me. I use the phrase “wander aimfully” because I never get lost and always end up right were I’m supposed to be. Last year, in New Orleans, my mom and I headed to a restaurant with great reviews. It was closed on Mondays, but we ended up being in a video shoot for a local band!
I used to work so hard that vacations became the only time I felt at peace. And since I needed more peace and I had a background in writing, I decided to blog about my trips.
Intersection of Dope focuses on amazing things to do and that allow travelers to experience the culture and richness of the destination through music, food and local spots that you won’t find on any other website or Top 10 list. There’s also a page dedicated to upcoming concerts and music festivals because that’s a great way to be immersed and visit new places.
I know there are travelers like me that want an authentic experience when they travel instead of just doing things on a tourist bucket list so everything I write has that traveler in mind.
Have you ever had to pivot?
I’ve become a pivot queen over time but I just look at it as an opportunity for growth. I went from a career-oriented, college graduate to a stay-at- home mom when I had my second son.
Then, when my oldest was 3, I jumped back into the workforce as a REALTOR. While working for a home builder I started to become so hyper-focused on being successful there that I felt myself losing connection with family so I quit at the peak of my career.
Now, I’m a newly-wed again, spending more time with my boys, traveling the world and loving myself again.
Alright – let’s talk about marketing or sales – do you have any fun stories about a risk you’ve taken or something else exciting on the sales and marketing side?
My favorite sales story is when I sold a 3-story house to a retiree!
He was a pastor and he and his wife had lived in parsonages their entire adult life. I didn’t really know what that meant at first but they’d never had a chance to personalize a space because their housing had always been provided by the church where he pastored.
Working for a home builder, there were one stories available as well as a home with the owner’s suite on the first floor but they were in love with the 3 story house and said they didn’t wait 70 years to settle.
That taught me to go for what I love at any age and that exactly what I’m doing.
