We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Leslie Jean. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Leslie below.
Leslie, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Learning the craft is often a unique journey from every creative – we’d love to hear about your journey and if knowing what you know now, you would have done anything differently to speed up the learning process.
Learning is a life long process. Everything I have experienced in life has led me to this point in time. I have always been an artist. Even in the sandbox. I went to commercial art school in Colorado Springs, Colorado.
My company Epiphany graphics spanned 30 years. Various life experiences including being a dive master in the Bahamas, as well as working underwater construction in Florida, has provided me a different perspective on life and my art. Inspired my nature, I consider myself an earth centered artist founded on a belief in the inter-connectedness of all forms of natural things and all forms of life.
I took mosaic classes from the late Karen Seawater based in Hawaii for so long she asked me to help teach.
I have studied with Roger Evans, http:www.wildheartsgallery-nm.com
The 91 year old Placitas man who combines building materials, illustration with humor and social commentary.
I have been a student for the past year and a half of Racheal Davies, a contemporary mosaic artist based in Scotland. Working with slate, stone and glass. https://www.rachealdaviesmosaics.com
To me everything is art. From yard art to the food on my plate. I find comfort in lines, colors and textures. I believe that art heals the soul and is a lens in which to view the world.
Learning is life.. don’t ever stop reaching for knowledge.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I work with stone, glass, and ceramics to create heartfelt mosaics. I put intent and spirit into my work.
Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
I had a 78’ foot roll over off of Look Out Mountain. When Flight for life got there the car was crushed to mid wheel.. they told me there was no reason I should be alive.. I replied, “oh yes, I just had a very spiritual experience.” I came to and intuitively knew nothing else mattered other than my art and my daughter. I had to learn to read and walk again.
Is there mission driving your creative journey?
Being a conduit for Spirit. Bringing joy, and soul healing art into the world.
