We were lucky to catch up with Leslie recently and have shared our conversation below.
Leslie, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. How did you learn to do what you do? Knowing what you know now, what could you have done to speed up your learning process? What skills do you think were most essential? What obstacles stood in the way of learning more?
I have a Fashion Merchandising Undergrad, and went on to Intern for Nordstrom where I began my basic training with MAC cosmetics. I worked as a professional make-up artist for 6 years and also worked for Bobbi Brown. I have learned so much from my experience, and the people along the way. I also continue to take make-up classes from the industry’s fashion creatives, and stay up to date on trends.
I feel the most important skills are ones that help you cater individually to each client, and help enhance what they naturally have, not create a carbon copy of what is supposed to be beautiful.
I think it’s important to stay humble, and know that there is usually something more that you can learn. There are many different ways to learn make-up artistry.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
Hi, my name is Leslie, and I am a make-up artist that has been in the beauty industry for 16 years. I am the most proud of empowering people to feel good about themselves. I really enjoy the fashion with the artisty that make-up provides. I love being to pull from my Fashion background and create unique styles. I don’t like seeing the make-up on people, just them but better..
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
I get to do what I love, and am not ever bored at it. Make-up constantly keeps you on your toes in that it is ever changing and progressing. I really enjoy connecting with others positively and genuinely.
Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
To not let what others are doing keep you from your own truth and light.
