We recently connected with Lesley Sherman and have shared our conversation below.
Lesley, appreciate you joining us today. We’d love to hear about a time you helped a customer really get an amazing result through their work with you.
So this was actually my first client ever as digital marketing consultant. He invented a completely new product in a really niche market and he had, for all intents and purposes, close to zero sales. He’d been operating his brand/business as a side thing for almost 8 years but between invention, production, and manufacturing, advertising had been little to none with no success and therefore sales were extremely low. He also had a very low budget. We started with only tiktok advertising, that’s where he found me, and because his product is a very visual product – you need to be able to see what it does to really appreciate it. I started the tiktok account completely from scratch and started advertising with no previosuly tested creatives or content. I created content, ad creatives, tested the material, and optimized his campaigns on only $1000/mo. (which is extremely low). It took a little over 3 mos but after running the campaigns with my advertising strategies and doing a deep dive into his website to discover what could be improved I was able to get his sales to a place where he could support my fees, his advertising costs, and turn a significant profit. And it kept improving from there. Not only was I proud of myself for this achievement starting completely from scratch with his company, but needless to say he was pretty happy too.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
So my name is Lesley Sherman, I’m 37, I have three girls and I’ve lived in south florida all my life. I actually got my degrees in accounting and business management and although i started off in public accounting, i obviously didn’t stay there. I was in the accounting industry until I had my 2nd girl and then became a stay at home mom. After not working for about 3 years I decided I really needed to help bring some extra income because all of a sudden our expenses started outweighing our income. I didn’t want to go back to work even part time and i knew someone who’d had a ton of success in digital marketing and completely set her own schedule so I decided to give that a try. I bought a course, the 10hr 10k Work Month, and off I went. My business consists of managing a brand’s meta ads, tiktok ads, and email marketing. I can also help with content and setting up tiktok shop but these are not my bread and butter and not really what I want to be doing. I’ve seen really great success in the way I’ve learned to run advertising campaigns and I really love bringing in that return for clients. I’m also basically able to do it in my free time and still handle multiple clients. It’s been life changing.
I think I bring a fresh take on advertising strategies that most agencies don’t do. They’re pretty foolproof. I also don’t require a long-term contract (I go month-to-month) and my fees and services are very flexible for all budgets. I’m actually super proud of myself for starting my own business from scratch, from home, while also being a stay at home mom. It was HARD, but totally worth it. I am honestly passionate about the digital marketing space and it excites me to see how successful it can be for businesses and brands. I get my creative juices flowing AND make everyone money, what could be better than that?

What’s been the most effective strategy for growing your clientele?
Lead generation campaigns, hands down. Out in the worlds of Indeed or Upwork you’re honestly just a dime a dozen. It’s extremely difficult to get recognized and hired over the millions of other freelancers that do exactly what you do. The most successful strategy for getting clients has been running advertsing/lead generation campaigns for myself. I am an expert digital marketer now, right? Why wouldn’t i use digital marketing to get more clients??

How did you put together the initial capital you needed to start your business?
Ooph so this was a tough decision. Obviously the course cost money, and running ads cost money. And these things werent cheap. I initially was extremely reluctant to do this, but eventually I decided the only way I could really move forward was to take out a credit card. It was nerve wracking but it paid off – no regrets!
