Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to LeRoy Henley IV. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hi LeRoy, thanks for joining us today. We’d love to hear the backstory behind a risk you’ve taken – whether big or small, walk us through what it was like and how it ultimately turned out.
As an independent label/artist the risk is in the business itself. I am a father and soon to be husband and with those titles come responsibility. Ive come to find out that my creative career needs the same time, nurturing, financial support and focus as my family do. So I risk time and money every time I begin working on a creative idea. On the other hand, I risk success and legacy for my family if I spend all my time and money on family . This is a daily decision and I realize they can work hand and hand, my family has become my source of creativity. The inspiration and energy I receive from the quality time we spend drives the next idea!
LeRoy, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I go by LeeBoi, the lead artist and founder of Satellite Music Entertainment LLC (SME) . Back in 2016 I had this idea of building an independent label of diverse artists that can connect under one umbrella and inspire the multitude. Countless man hours and gallons of creative juices both valued and waisted SME has grown over the years into a well known and rather respected label/brand in San Diego and other parts of the world. From artists to DJ to clothing to events we are a very multitalented company that prides itself in putting on a show.
Have you ever had to pivot?
Many people from artists to YouTubers want that “big break” to be seen by a gatekeeper in their field and be that next big thing without having to deal with the intricate details of business. I jumped into music fast and hard but after listening and learning from my elders Nipsey Hussle & Kanye West talk about ownership and equity I had to literally scrap an entire catalog of music due to the fact that I wanted to know more. I took the approach that I would make sure I know all the specifics of my music from writers splits to leasing or exclusive beat purchasing. If you own nothing you have no leverage and without leverage you can’t negotiate.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
For me, its becoming apart of your followers lives! When they wake up to or go to bed to your music. When they where your clothing brand or and other expressions of your influence on them.
