We were lucky to catch up with Leonardo Martins recently and have shared our conversation below.
Leonardo, appreciate you joining us today. One of the things we most admire about small businesses is their ability to diverge from the corporate/industry standard. Is there something that you or your brand do that differs from the industry standard? We’d love to hear about it as well as any stories you might have that illustrate how or why this difference matters.
I always believe that we can go beyond the parameters established by the industry. I think that the words that involve these years in my career are: dedication, resilience and interaction. I have always been 100% dedicated to excelling in everything the industry brought in innovation and goals. Working with vinyl record curation often takes me to places of dreams and client achievements. I need to dedicate myself a lot to choose the best one for the collector. And only at the moment of interaction will I be able to extract as much information from the customer so that not only at the time of sale, but throughout our relationship, I can assertively know his taste and surprise him at any time, delivering some albums that he didn’t even dream of getting.
So I think what differentiates me in the market is the fact I always dedicate myself to going beyond what the client expects, therefore moving the entire chain of the music industry.
Leonardo, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I have worked in the business and marketing sector my entire life. Something would always lead me to business and people management.
I worked in the Steel, Banking and Telecommunications industry in Brazil. However, I always dreamt of working with what and I loved and knew how to do: curation in the music industry.
In 2015, I was already here in the United States. I dedicated myself to putting my dream into action and created a business centered in Brazil. There, I was able to perfect the art of record curation and make a difference in collectors’ lives and phonographic industry chain, moving small events, markets, and music students to distributers and competitor stores. In these 7 years, I supplied thousands records for collectors around the world.
In 2021, I felt the time had come to put my grand plan into action. So, I opened my physical store in Florida with a focus on curation, interaction, service and results.
I dedicate myself to presenting Brazilian music to clients and in this way, introduce a different culture to the music industry here in the USA.
Every customer who enters my store is of upmost importance to me. I try to extract a much information about them as possible so that I can deliver exactly what he seeks as a collector.
Most of the stores I’ve seen around the world feel metaphorically cold and that bothers me. I wanted to change this. I wanted to do it differently. I designed a space where I could treat each client with joy, interaction, and respect for individuality.
And I see that this has brought me excellent results in this first year of the store. I can tell from customer feedback that they are there for the uniqueness I bring.
The store has been growing in inventory, numbers and customers.
I thank God for all these achievements. Much remains to be done. I have many plans and goals for the years ahead. I am very proud to be an immigrant who makes a positive impact outside my country for the entire music industry chain.
What’s been the most effective strategy for growing your clientele?
I believe that my uniqueness in the market, that brings me more and more clients, is my focus on managing not only the business but also the people. I offer excellent customer service and care to listen to my customers. Through their life story, I build a relationship of trust with them. In addition, I work with fair prices and excellence in the products I deliver. The result of this formula will always be positive.
Can you tell us the story behind how you met your business partner?
I think the easiest part of finding my business partner was that she has always been by my side throughout my career. My wife has always walked side by side with me supporting me and helping me to grow at every point in my life. It was no different when we decided to go on the entrepreneurial journey together. For some couples it can be a disastrous result, but in my case, I have been reaping excellent results as partners over the last few years.
