We were lucky to catch up with Leon Araujo recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Leon , thanks for joining us today. We’d love to hear about a project that you’ve worked on that’s meant a lot to you.
One of my favorite projects was a mural installation at Daybreak South Jordan, UT. It was a design for a community pool area and it was truly an awesome experience. The design is a mermaid submerged in the sea with fishes near by. The mermaid has a crown and a staff. “La Reina Del Mar” is one of my proudest murals and I get really excited every time I see it.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I am a Latinx visual artist based out of Ogden, Utah. I specialize in digital media, murals and videography but all sorts of arts are exciting to me. I first got into the industry through a series of sketches named “Sketching Ogden” where I drew close to 52 Building facades. I shared business information, favorite items from the business and their contact information. This series really took off and people shared them all across social media and eventually ended up as a digital cover for a magazine. As I improved on my photography and videography skills, I began creating content for Indie Ogden. After one year of working with the magazine, I began freelancing my visual art skills. I have now worked with multiple organizations such as Ogden Downtown Alliance, Nurture the Creative Mind, Good Co. Theatre, Lupec, Consulado de Mexico and Rail City Productions. Last year was the busiest year I’ve had so far. I created my first mural and ended the year with 6 murals done in total. I was part of an international event called ArtBattle where I had 20 minutes to create an artwork. I opened up my design firm Noel Creative House where we specialize in finding a visual answer for businesses needs. Whether it’s a mural they would like installed in their location, a website, content creation for their business or more, NCH has the answer. Through collaboration and creativity, I have been able to create an immense amount of artworks. My style is vibrant, bold and inclusive. My favorite part of the process for creating an artwork for a city, business or individual, is the personal connection I am able to create with the community and people involved. Something about the relationships that flourish after collaborating makes my heart happy.
What can society do to ensure an environment that’s helpful to artists and creatives?
For me, I feel like a sustainable creative environment could happen through collaboration. Businesses should hire and encourage local art. Through support and collaboration an ecosystem can be created where all parties involved can thrive.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
As I mentioned before, collaboration, collaboration, collaboration. I truly believe this helped me be where I am now and it allowed me to have meaningful conversations with individuals I had nothing in common with (or so I thought). It allowed me to get to know multiple individuals I would have not otherwise interacted with. Now, I can say I have made many friends through my art endeavors
