We recently connected with Leo Von Sol and have shared our conversation below.
Leo, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today What’s been the most meaningful project you’ve worked on?
The most meaningful project I’ve worked on has to be writing my first single after changing my artist name. The song, Even the Darkest Flowers Still Bloom, marked a significant moment in my journey as an artist. For almost six years, I made music under a different name (Jxckson), but after participating in a songwriting program called SongCraft here in Austin, I discovered my more authentic voice. It was during that time that I wrote Even the Darkest Flowers, and I’m incredibly proud of its poetic point of view, which mirrors how I felt about the transformation I was going through in my own life.
I had been struggling with my identity as an artist, but this song helped me realize I wasn’t changing who I was—I was finally discovering the artist I’d always been but hadn’t fully embraced. The inspiration behind the single came from nature and getting back to my roots. At the time, I was writing a lot of songs inspired by flowers, and one day, I stumbled across the Chocolate Cosmos, a dark flower that blooms so beautifully (and people really do say it smells like red velvet cake). That image stuck with me. It reminded me that even in darkness, there’s growth and transformation, which gave me a sense of relief and peace.
Writing this song made me realize I had more to offer as a singer and songwriter than I’d ever given myself credit for. It was a defining moment that led to my decision to start over with a new, more authentic name and identity.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I’m Leo Von Sol, Austin’s indie pop artist with a folk twist. My journey into music started at a young age, but it was in 2024 that I truly found my voice. After nearly six years of making music under a different name, I realized I wasn’t being true to myself. That realization led me to rebrand as Leo Von Sol after a transformative songwriting program where I embraced authenticity, both in my music and identity.
My music blends indie-pop melodies with folk-inspired storytelling, focusing on personal growth, change, and self-discovery. Each song is designed to connect deeply with listeners, offering poetic lyrics and introspective themes that resonate on a universal level. What sets me apart is the combination of modern indie pop with the timeless storytelling tradition of folk music—creating a unique sound that is reflective, authentic, and relatable.
I’m most proud of my debut EP, Endless Summer. It’s a blend of folk-inspired melodies and indie pop vibes, inviting listeners into a space of my personal reflections.
My mission is simple: to create music that feels real and speaks to shared human experiences. I want my work to offer moments of introspection and self-expression, and as a queer artist, I’m also committed to expanding representation in the indie music space. I believe that queer voices can shape a wide range of genres and tell stories that resonate with everyone.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
For me, the most rewarding aspect of being an artist is writing songs that people connect with on a personal level. There’s something magical about creating a song from nothing—taking an idea, a feeling, or even just a melody and turning it into something tangible. The process of songwriting feels like a kind of alchemy, and when people hear that song and react or find their own connection to it, there’s nothing like it.
Knowing that something I created resonates with someone else, whether it brings them comfort, joy, or reflection, is what makes being an artist so fulfilling.
In your view, what can society to do to best support artists, creatives and a thriving creative ecosystem?
In my view, the best way to support artists and foster a thriving creative ecosystem is to start locally. Support local artists by attending their shows, streaming their music, sharing their work on social media, and buying their merch. There’s an incredible amount of talent in our own backyard, and supporting local creatives helps to build a strong foundation for the arts in our communities.
It doesn’t take much to make a difference… resharing a link, attending a show, or even a simple shoutout can go a long way. If we want to continue seeing great art and music, we need to invest in the artists around us. A thriving creative ecosystem starts with community support, and that’s something we can all easily contribute to.
