We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Leo Sandoval a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Leo thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Can you talk to us about a project that’s meant a lot to you?
Absolutely! I am very excited about a new music video I just released. The response has been beyond my expectations and that means a lot to me. I am also working on several more and hope to release another one sometime soon.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
Hi! My name is Leo Sandoval. I am a mexican independent music artist and social media influencer. I was born in Zacatecas and moved to the US as a young teen. I started my career as a makeup artist working for well known companies and making videos on social media with my husband, Walter whom is deceased. He was also a makeup artist. His passing happened unexpectedly causing me to spiral downwards into a deep state of depression. Thankfully, I was surrounded by countless friends and extended family (my followers). And with their help, I was lifted up and shown that music was the way to go. I had always wanted to be in the music industry, an artist. I took a leap of faith, and here we are today. I had recorded and shared 3 songs: “Siempre Vivirás en Mi”, “La Cumbia de las Petras” and “Falsa Sociedad” until December, in which I released a brand new music video called “Romance Bipolar”. It is a remix and collaboration with another independent artist named Cassey Morresco. I personally did all the editing of the video creating the remix. That is what I am most proud of right now. “Romance Bipolar” and the amazing support of my extended family and friends.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect of me being an artist is being the whole package. It’s being able to write the lyrics, compose the music, and record and edit my own videos. Not an easy task I must say. But, the passion I have felt for music since I was a child and the unconditional support of my fans and followers, have taught me that life goes on no matter how much it may hurt or how difficult the road may seem.
How can we best help foster a strong, supportive environment for artists and creatives?
I can go on and on about this topic. But right now, society as a whole needs to open up to independent artists, specially from the LGBTQ community. We are frowned upon regardless of if we do something or don’t. Society is lacking empathy and true love. Yet, I have been blessed with a community that supports me all the way regardless of orientation, religion, likes or dislikes. And I am extremely grateful.
