Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Leo Chan. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Alright, Leo thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Earning a full time living from one’s creative career can be incredibly difficult. Have you been able to do so and if so, can you share some of the key parts of your journey and any important advice or lessons that might help creatives who haven’t been able to yet?
Levitate Style was started as a creative side hustle back in 2014 to share my passions in fashion, travel, and photography on blog and social media. I was working in corporate finance at Morgan Stanley and then Barclays Bank when I noticed that Instagram was just starting to take off. Growing up as an immigrant in NYC, I did not see much representation for Asian males in the media (TV, movies, magazines, etc) From there, I realized my purpose is positive Asian presentation by making a change by creating my own content and sharing on my platforms.
Through sharing my content on social media and networking with companies and agencies in NYC, I got to work with GQ on brand partnerships and also have been featured in Forbes, Men’s Health, and more over the years.
In 2016 I took a leap of faith and transitioned to content creation full-time because I got a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to travel the world for five months on a world cruise project that led me to visit 50 cities in 26 countries.
Leo, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I’m a men’s fashion, travel, and lifestyle influencer. Creative director behind Levitate Style – handling all aspects of the content creation process from modeling, and styling, to shooting and more. Over the years keeping up with the change of social media landscape from blog to long and short-form videos.
Over the years, I got to work with brands from all industries of lifestyle such as Bacardi, Bentley, Bloomingdales, and more.
We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
Quality over Quantity but Consistency all day. Quality + Consistency = Consistent Quality
See what your favorite influencers and brands are posting and strive to have quality content similar to that level. Posting consistently about the subject you love and are passionate about. Constantly digest social media and identify the trends so you can hop on and create content relating to that moment. Figure out what you have to contribute in that space and subject and what makes your content unique.
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
As an immigrant from Hong Kong who grew up in NYC, I didn’t see positive Asian representation growing up. Seeing is believing. I want to inspire others with my content as a way of building self-confidence, breaking the ceiling, going to new heights, and traveling the world more.
Passion is fashion, Purpose is representation. By finding both passion and purpose – it lit a fire that won’t be easily extinguished.
