We were lucky to catch up with Lenor Kakos recently and have shared our conversation below.
Lenor, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Can you tell us about a time where you or your team really helped a customer get an amazing result?
I have a regular client that I have been seeing biweekly for almost two years. She is a mom in her late 30s who tells me how when she drops her kids off at the bus stop she always feels like the prettiest mom there because she woke up with her lashes. She is a busy mom who does not always have time in the morning to put on a full face. Seeing how happy she is every time she walks out of my lash room is such a blissful feeling. I also have a 75 year old women who comes in regularly to get her lashes done. She says it is one of her favorite beauty treatments to get done because of how young they make her feel. Plus she always gets a nap in and wakes up with her fresh “fluffies!”
Lenor, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
Lashing was definitely not something I suspected myself ever getting into! I initially went to college and obtained a bachelors in Psychology. I then went to nursing school for a semester before deciding it was not the field for me. I went back to college in hopes to obtain a masters in psychology. After deciding to take a different career route I enrolled into esthetician school. A classmate who was a lash artist assisted in teaching me about her craft and how she started her business. After practicing for a few months I decided to start a career as a lash artist. Lashing requires a lot of patience and practice which made my love for it grow. I enjoyed how much concentration and precision it took to do a set of lashes. I also began to enjoy all the people I had to privilege to work on. After working at a couple of salons, I started working at a lash and brow bar called Prim & Plush. Sarah, the owner, was diligent in ensuring I had the proper training and knowledge to take on clients. After a few months, Sarah extended the opportunity to start as an independent business owner within her salon. She has been a significant asset to my business and a wonderful supporter. The most common service I provide are lash extensions however I also do brow shapes, tints, and lamination along with lash lifts and tints. I enjoy working with brows almost as much as lashing! But brows are fun too because they can help define a persons face. Lots of people have sparse brows and a proper brow routine will keep your brows looking clean and full!
What sets my lash work apart from others is that the integrity of your natural lashes is placed as a higher priority than the look of the lash extensions. I want your lashes to look beautiful but not at the cost of destroying your natural lashes. I wash each clients lashes prior to working on them and send them home with a lash washing brush and a spoolie for optimal lash care at home. What sets my brow work apart from others is that I take my time to ensure the brows are kept full and natural. I will not let a client off my bed until they are 100% satisfied with their brows.
I am most proud of the wonderful clientele I have obtained. I am grateful for each person that allows me to perform my art on them. Obtaining these services is a form of self care and I want each clients experience to make them feel happy, uplifted and beautiful, as it should.
The main things I would like potential clients to know about me is that I understand the gravity of working on the face and eyes so I constantly exercise proper sanitation and cleanliness within my work room. I genuinely love what I do and what I do brings me happiness which I will never take for granted.
Any advice for growing your clientele? What’s been most effective for you?
The most effective strategy for growing your clientele is definitely word of mouth! When I first started my business I had a 20% off referral promotion. If any of my current clients referred someone, both of them would receive 20% off their next service. New clients receiving a discount makes it feel more safe for them to try a new lash/brow artist while a friend receives a discount as well! It is a wonderful way to have your current clientele help build your business while they are also debuting your work.
How did you build your audience on social media?
Social media is definitely a great way to increase clientele. When building a social media presence it is helpful to maintain a certain theme and image. I try to ensure my layout is organized and consistent. I have before and/or after pictures of all my services to ensure potential clients have a good sense of what my work is like. If you already have a personal social media page, it is great to consider changing it into a business page that way you still have your current followers along with family and friends to see and support your business. I also found it helpful to follow other people that are within your demographic and to send them promotional offers if they follow you back.
