We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Lenin Rincon Jr. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Lenin below.
Lenin, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Learning the craft is often a unique journey from every creative – we’d love to hear about your journey and if knowing what you know now, you would have done anything differently to speed up the learning process.
I started by downloading free audio software. I kept extending my free software and then learning new software. In 11th grade I got into a high school that offered beat making class. 12th grade I assisted in teaching fellow students how to make beats and record their own tracks. The music teacher Mr. Luffred, I have to mention because he did a great deal of believing in me and letting me bring home different softwares, the full versions. He even allowed me to isolate with a real synthesizer. You know what was most essential? Curiosity, and hunger. Hunger like a desire to keep being fascinated by the way of making music and always feeling confident to know the music would work regardless how it was recorded or mixed like. I think early on I didn’t perceive obstacles, the only ever obstacles I’ve allowed is fraternizing with the girls. Love love girls. Lol.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
Previously you might’ve read about me on Voyage- Lenin Rincon Jr or Black Hoody Recordings (the publishing imprint I release music under). I think what has set me apart is my ability to maneuver the internet and search for new ways of releasing music and marketing music. I am very proud of the self release strategies I have used since all we had was MySpace. I am proud of being an 16-18 year old whose brand new instrumental album Soul landed on big blogs like hypemachine and drowned in sound (Alias; orchidbeats/ orchid pathways). The amount of quality fan base we’ve garnered via different bands and aliases under Black Hoody has always impressed me. I mean you can find my digital footprint dating back to maybe, early 2009. I mean I’ve been uploading performance videos and iPhone iPad beat making videos for the longest. And for years it seemed like I had burdens of legal, mental health turmoil with only music and sound exploration to save my soul.
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
Lenin of Lenny the Heart has been honing his craft since 2009. I started off with software like audacity, Fruity Loops, GarageBand, reason, iPhone IPad and graduated to probably over 20 hardware synthesizers and samplers. But, the story of resilience is when I was stopped in my tracks, by my own impulsive ways. I did some county jail time followed by rehab at Fort Lauderdale’s House of Hope. I was away from music for 15 months before I was let go on house arrest. It is only then that I really tuned into the frequencies that have helped heal me and inspire others. During house arrest, a couple more beat albums were released as ORCHIDBEATS, On orchidbeats.bandcamp.com as well as dropping my debut Rap Tape “Lenin” on Datpiff, and YouTube. So yeah, check out Lenin by Lenin\Lenny the Heart and you can hear first hand, my account of struggle and resilience.

What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
It feels like when you’re your most down there’s someone out there, on the internet or something who reaches out. They reach out like “hey dude, your music is…” yeah… it’s a reward.
