We recently connected with Lenardo Blackmon and have shared our conversation below.
Lenardo, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Can you talk to us about a project that’s meant a lot to you?
My comedy special is the most meaningful project I’ve worked on to me to this point. I wanted to get out a project to be remembered by. To also challenge my self yo complete a project as well as tell about myself through my art form.
Lenardo, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I’m comedian Nardo, also known as NardoBlacktastic. I like to think of myself as a man of the people, I like to feel like I represent the essence of Jackson urban community. I’ve been doing comedy for 13 years. I started in a comedy contest after I got laid off at work. I just remember my “white co workers saying I was funny & right after we got laid off the competition came. As of today I’ve been on two tours, one with Kerwin Claiborne & the other with Jackson’s own Rita B. Both are good comedy friends I’m thankful those experiences I think they both helped me grow comically in different ways. I think what sets me apart is I have a way of making you feel like the neighbor or guy next door, also I have a fine mix of ratchet & intelligence that mixed make for a great time with a few drinks. In my 13th year I’ve created a brand or slogan chilly don dilly which I say when it’s cold out. I’ve also created a comical weatherman character who tells the weather based on tha name “the chilly don dilly report”. The other milestone again is my comedy special that just tells about me, my ideals growing up with a parent with substance abuse issues & my autistic & some things about how I grew up. It will give you a decent understanding of who I am, how I think. What is like ppl to take a way from me is I just love to make ppl laugh from natural life situations as well as clever situations that can help people understand each other similarities despite whatever differences. All together there’s nothing that gives me the satisfaction of doing a well put together comedy set & reaping the benefits. I can’t explain a better feeling, I love the accolades but it’s nothing like the laughter & appreciation for making someone say better.
We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
When I didn’t make the Kevin hart competition but I kept doing comedy. I’d quit for a while but I realized I genuinely loved it, I turned that energy into the hard work that I take into my daily approach to comedy & just work in general today.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
Appreciation for being able to create & share with the masses.
