We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Lena Pham a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Lena, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Are you happier as a creative? Do you sometimes think about what it would be like to just have a regular job? Can you talk to us about how you think through these emotions?
Being in the entertainment industry entails a lot of imposter syndrome and self doubt. Oftentimes I find myself questioning the path I am following. I am currently in college and surrounded with peers who are certain of what they are doing and who they want to be which scares me. I have to remind myself that everyone battles with their own insecurities and self doubts. I love what I do. Music is such a beautiful outlet to share, communicate, and understand your emotions. It is a form of expression, a universal language that everyone can understand. Every time I find myself questioning my direction, I simply listen to a song and remember why I love it.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I am a singer/song writer. My compositions are a majority based in the pop genre. I have been in the entertainment industry for as long as I can remember, I love to sing and producing music is a means for self expression which I feel so fortunate to share. Composing a piece of music to me, is about sharing an experience, a thought, or a feeling and hoping is resonates or is relatable to listeners. I want to make things people enjoy and for a short interval of time, transport them. I write a lot from personal experience and sharing that is so meaningful to me, and is my proudest achievement.

What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
For me, the most rewarding aspect lies in the ability to express myself authentically and connect deeply with others through music. Creating something that resonates with people emotionally or intellectually is incredibly fulfilling. Additionally, the process of continuous growth and improvement in my craft also brings a sense of personal satisfaction and achievement.

Is there something you think non-creatives will struggle to understand about your journey as a creative?
I go to a university where the arts are not as prevalent and appreciated. While the achievements of my peers should not go unnoticed, there are some aspects that non-creatives cannot see. Making music is an incredibly vulnerable and challenging process. For artists, musicians, writers, and creators of all kinds, our work often feels like an extension of ourselves. This can make the experience of sharing our creations with others deeply personal and sometimes vulnerable. The highs of inspiration and creative breakthroughs are exhilarating, but so are the lows of self-doubt and criticism.
