Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Leighshana Barrett. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Leighshana, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Almost all entrepreneurs have had to decide whether to start now or later? There are always pros and cons for waiting and so we’d love to hear what you think about your decision in retrospect. If you could go back in time, would you have started your business sooner, later or at the exact time you started?
I would have started my business sooner for sure. I love what I do and I love sharing what my business stands for with others. Getting those messages from clients telling me how my products make them feel and how much they enjoy them make me even happier. I started my business in October 2020. It was the height of COVID. I didn’t have a job then and I wasn’t interested in putting myself in a situation to get sick. I realized many people were indoors and needed items they couldn’t get to with the lockdowns and COVID going around. I know I like to look good all the time so I thought why not help others. My business is one that stands for adding that extra component so you feel your beautiful self. I wanted to share that with a world that was locked down and going bananas looking at the four walls around them. Had I started my business sooner, I would have had way more knowledge in running my business and reaching higher heights. That knowledge would help me today as I run my business but I am working on it and getting better day by day.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
First and Foremost, I am 22 and I am a Tax Accountant. I went to school for Accounting. I would panic in my last year as I didn’t have an internship yet and many of my classmates spoke to corporations and had opportunities lined up. After applying to many corporations (and being declined), I found solace in the 5th Largest Accounting Corporation. I couldn’t be happier! I had an opportunity lined up in my last semester and fresh out of college. I am still with them to this day and I love it!
I started my business in October of 2020. We are “Sophisticated Goddess, LLC” and currently we sell beauty products like lashes and lip gloss. I am so proud that through a pandemic, I pushed with this business. It is like my child and I love it dearly. I feel like the way my products make my customers feel after using them is what sets me apart. They feel “ROYAL”! To those who love and follow us, new things are coming and we will be having an awesome rebrand this year!
We’d love to hear your thoughts about selling platforms like Amazon/Etsy vs selling on your own site.
I sell on my website. I used to sell on Etsy and I loved it for a time. After awhile, you want to sell your products somewhere that is solely connected to you and where the fees aren’t outrageous. I moved everything to my site and from my site I can bring in customers, post to socials, send emails, and display all of the great things my business has to offer.
For those who do use other platforms, I think it works great if you want to supplement your website and offer quicker services! You rock if you use both!
We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
I had to unlearn that is perfectly fine to take breaks! I have always been an on-the-go type of person where I am constantly working. Sometimes you have to step back and take a look from the outside in. It will better your business and better your health.
My business is one big area where breaks are needed. You have to access and analyze what is going on. Right now, it is the beginning of 2023. A great time for new goals and restocks but in order to do both, you have to step back and analyze. Some of our products sold better than others in 2022. This is the time to take a break and discontinue certain products while restocking others. This is the time to take a look at the social media presence your business has and if a new logo maybe needed.
Taking breaks whether to see how you are doing so far or to take care of your health, is always important!
