We recently connected with Leigh Kubin and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Leigh thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. We’d love to hear the backstory behind a risk you’ve taken – whether big or small, walk us through what it was like and how it ultimately turned out.
I found myself in a space of playing it safe. That was the way I lived. Everything I did was well thought out and intentional. If it wasn’t safe, I wanted no part of it. The problem was, I wasn’t growing, I wasn’t inspired and I was bored. I would analyze all the things that could go wrong with a particular idea and talk myself out of anything “risky”, including my dreams! So when I got the nudge to add a certification to my resume, I told myself I was just doing it to help me grow in my current position. When I completed two certifications I started to get ideas of how to turn this into a business and wondered “What if”? Something sparked in me at that moment, but I didn’t realize the significance of it until I began to see the benefits of those nudges that I got almost daily. I would say yes to them and began to act on them even when I was scared.
Today when I get inspired thought, I act and what shows up is nothing short of miraculous. The right people, events, and circumstances show up to take me to the next step. I spend a small amount of time daydreaming about what my ideal day/week/life looks like. When I feel negative emotions in my body, I quickly jump to the stories that I’m telling and laugh at myself for a minute and then start telling the story of what I actually want to create.
Taking a risk can be as simple as going to the grocery store, picking up the phone to call someone, leaving a job and starting something new, or daring to change your thinking and create the life you want. We didn’t come here to play it small or “safe”. We came here to express ourselves and we all have our own unique way of doing that. The best risk we can take is to fully show up every day and realize the power that we have to create anything we want. in our life.
Leigh, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I began this journey 13 years ago and it started as a weight loss coach. I loved helping people create the bodies they wanted and found out the weight was just a distraction. What they wanted was to show up in life. They wanted to take risks, to continue to learn and grow, but they didn’t think things were possible for them because of their weight. As I began to see the patients completely transform, not just in size, but in the way they were showing up in life, I knew I needed to add certifications to my Psychology degree. The one thing I began to link to keeping their weight off was a mindset shift. The ones that were living intentionally not only didn’t worry about weight anymore but they were focused on creating an amazing life!
When I coach clients for weight loss, I don’t give food too much airtime during our meetings. This is just a distraction from what they really want. My philosophy is to get on a meal plan or stick to a certain macro code that will help get that weight off and get to work on yourself. When people begin to show up and realize they don’t have to wait for some “magic” number on the scale to give them permission to kick ass in life, they show up and do it! This has led me to work with other people that aren’t showing up in life because they don’t have enough money or because they think they don’t have the education they need, Some don’t show. up because they want a lover or home or car first. Some think they are too old. Some don’t show up because they don’t think they deserve it. They think what currently is, is all that is available to them. You get the idea. There are so many things that keep people from showing up, and once they don’t have that excuse anymore and realize they can show up NOW, just as they are, they transform their life.
The thing I am most proud of about my work is the growth I get to watch every week in my clients. I can see “the magic” in them before they do, so I see it coming. When it manifests and they are doing things they never dreamed they would do, I remind them that they created this!! Seeing them use that power is absolutely amazing and once they understand the power they have, they do amazing things with it!
Do you think you’d choose a different profession or specialty if you were starting now?
Oh, the idea of going back and getting a do-over is a fun one! If I could have a conversation with my younger self, I would tell her how much fun life is supposed to be. I would let her know this world isn’t a scary place and that there is no need to carry around the drama and trauma of her youth. I would have started taking risks and changed my mindset sooner. If I could go back, it wouldn’t be to change my profession, I can’t imagine doing anything else, but I would have gotten here sooner!
Training and knowledge matter of course, but beyond that what do you think matters most in terms of succeeding in your field?
Yes, training and knowledge are beneficial and sometimes required. However, the mindset is the most helpful for success in any field. We have to believe in who we are and what we do and we have to believe that success is ours. It doesn’t always matter how skilled we might be in a particular field, if we believe we can do it, we will.
